Engineering team and processes

Our team operates on a culture of trust and autonomy. We are organized into cross functional product squads with each squad having high level mandates and autonomy to solve problems. Most of the problems we are solving are greenfield problems as we don't have much legacy infrastructure. We have a microservice architecture and each team is empowered to spin up any services they need to solve the problems they're solving. We have a top notch platform designed in-house which allows this to happen with minimal DevOps headaches and deploys everything into autoscaling containers hosted on AWS. Most squads follow one week sprints and we try to keep process to a minimum. We also have no meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays for focused maker time.

Technical Challenges

We are considering how to represent a floor plan programmatically so we can break it into zones and automatically lay out an office. We are making that floor plan smart so if our workplace strategists come in later and change the layout of the office, we store that and can learn from it later in data, informing future automated layouts.

We are dealing with building management systems to alter the HVAC and change temperature in offices based on readings from IOT temperature sensors we place throughout an office and analytics done on that temperature to detect outliers and understand when an office is not comfortable.

We have standardized access control across Knotel offices and we can interact with that access control layer via an API so we can build apps and services which allow access in the real world based on user permissions in those apps.

We are working with localized sub-meter mapping to identify where things are within a space.

Projects you might work on
  • You would be building a system to take a floor plan and automate the placement of desks, chairs, sofas, etc. within that floor plan in ways that make sense. This has us combining interesting techniques to convert the floor plan from its source CAD format into something we can view and work with on the web, integrating with our supply chain systems to understand what furniture we have available, and constantly improving the placement algorithms to reduce collisions and adhere to ideal workplace strategy and layout

  • You would be building a new iOS and Android app from scratch in React Native to offer a top notch user experience to people who are in our offices. This app will integrate things like access control, notifications, issue reporting, a la carte office services, and much more into an experience that makes the users love being in a Knotel space.

  • You would be working with our Knotel Labs squad rapidly prototyping solutions for dealing with things like IOT and sensor data. For instance, we have 50 temperature sensors deployed throughout a space, we'd like to understand where those sensors are in the space so you may build a prototype for a map and where to drop sensors in that space. From there you will build an API to consume the temperature readings from the space in a way which is highly scalable because it will result in a lot of data if/when we deploy thousands of sensors across our spaces all streaming back data.
