Engineering at Lawyaw
Lawyaw's product cycles are based on Basecamp's Shape Up methodology. Cycles are generally 4-6 weeks with a cool down week in-between. The cycles are comprised of several bets
. Each bet is well documented so that engineers have proper context, such as the problem we are trying to solve, and the outcome we are hoping to achieve, user stories, key elements, and rabbit holes to look out for. Bets are shaped
prior to each cycle by our CEO, Dir. of Product Engineering, head of Design, head of UX research and other stakeholders as needed. But the implementation is left largely to the engineers, as we embrace a fixed appetite + variable scope
approach. Engineers tend to like this process because it sets them up for success and ensures they are spending time on high impact work. We value making space for deep work and the entire process is designed to provide engineers with significant ownership and autonomy. The success of a bet depends on each person's ability to communicate, plan, prioritize, and collaborate.
We are at a critical inflection point and are working to upgrade our initial systems to support our next phase of growth. Phase I was all about shipping product and finding product market fit. We are now in the process of stepping back, assessing our core systems, and shoring up initial decisions as we combine our two existing two products into a single platform, and build for scale.
We have many exciting, new product changes in the works. We are currently working on building a questionnaire feature to help our customers gather client data. It is sophisticated on the backend but simple to end users, and empowers customers with a
no-code
orlow-code
interface for building dynamically generated documents. We are in the process of migrating to k8 on AWS. Some of the areas you might work on include: performance testing to reveal app bottlenecks, surfacing app-level metrics to Prometheus/Datadog to build auto-scaling/alerting on, and deploying a service that handles ETL/ELT between our database and customer-facing 3rd party integrations.
We are building and scaling our field tagging architecture. Our tagging architecture empowers users by allowing them to pull in their data from external sources and re-use that data across multiple documents and projects.
As part of a change to our pricing structure, for example, you might need to work on our backend that talks to Stripe and communicate these changes to users with updates to the UI, our marketing site, our Analytics schema, and objects in Salesforce. Additionally, you may work on gating ambitious new features behind feature flags in order to roll them out incrementally, to our early adopters first.
Higher level: We are working with a large background check company to help streamline criminal record expungements. People with criminal records are blocked from jobs, housing, education and more, yet an estimated 30M people in the US who have already served their punishments are eligible to have their criminal records sealed and removed from their records. The problem is that the process is confusing, tedious, and requires lots of paperwork. We are helping them to streamline this process.
Higher level: We are working with a legal aid organization to help thousands of people who are getting kicked out of their homes. By helping streamlining their wrongful eviction workflows, we are helping under-staffed and under-resourced legal aid organizations significantly increase their capacity to help poor and low income people in need.
