Lever powers hiring at Netflix, Cirque du Soleil, Shopify, Yelp, the Linux Foundation, and many fellow YC alumni. Lever is a modern alternative to an applicant tracking system, what companies use to manage their hiring. Unique to Lever, managers, engineers, CEOs, and entire companies—not just recruiters—love its design and love using it.

On the technical side, we authored a unique JavaScript stack, DerbyJS. It is the first and only open source MVC framework that syncs all data via Operational Transformation (the algorithm behind Google Docs and Wave) and that renders everything on the server as well as the client.

Why join us?

  • Our product & technology.

Lever is the only modern applicant tracking system built on technology that allows for real time data syncing and collaboration via operational transformation, the algorithm behind Google Docs. Lever is built on top of DerbyJs (authored by our CTO & Founder, Nate Smith), and we render JavaScript on both the client and server side. This allows engineers to work on any part of the stack. We are candidate centric and each candidate has a single source of truth profile. Our UI speaks for itself, we are built using design thinking principles and with human centered design and user empathy at the forefront. We build tools and a collaborative software for all our end users, focusing on their unique experiences. Lever is able to handle complicated and nuanced technical challenges. Email in software apps, in general is really complicated. At Lever we make it easy for anyone to jump in as you and face off when you might not have a moment to, we realize how fast-paced recruiting is and we build tools to optimize for that. Lever can thread emails, thread notes between people, make sure things are synced properly, you can send on behalf of someone, reply on behalf of them, delay send, track clicks and opens — we make sure our software is as seamless as possible.

  • Our approach.

At Lever, we focus on many things: design thinking, human-centered design, stellar hiring, inclusion, just to a name a few. But we also focus extensively on cross-functional empathy. We empathize so much with our customers that are fervently growing and scaling their teams that their feedback makes it into our product. But we also strive to ensure we understand our peers, their context, and their needs. It's something that has grown the incredible culture we have and allows us to make sure all feel welcome, valued, and understood. At Lever, we don't work in silos, and it's important to work well with peers as we all put our best effort forward to do what is best for Lever.

We have also, since the early days, focused on diversity and inclusion, which complements cross-functional empathy incredibly well. We formed a diversity and inclusion task force when we were a company of just ten employees, and we're so proud to continue our growing efforts as our company grows, too. From hosting D&I panels to including D&I in every new hire onboarding class, we make diversity and inclusion a priority so we can continue to do what we do already: work collaboratively together to learn, develop, grow, and produce world-class products that enable companies to achieve their own goals.

  • The opportunity.

Scale is everything. Every company is racing to seize millions of users and billions of clicks, and to do so means scaling your employee base faster than previously imaginable.

But with that scale come intense organizational and hiring challenges. We saw it firsthand, as our peers in Silicon Valley were starting companies, bootstrapping teams, and pressing everyone they knew for referrals. Intrepid engineering managers were hacking together custom data dashboards to track their pipelines and analyze their interviewing processes. The top-of-mind issue was not only how to recruit, but also how to recruit the best.

Out of that environment, Lever was born. We want to give companies of the future a better way to form, grow, and sustain teams of talented people, so we set out to bring world-class design and engineering to bear on the challenge of growth.

We were lucky enough to incubate within one of Silicon Valley’s fastest growing companies and work side by side with their team of 30+ recruiters, where we became intimately familiar with the daily pains of their jobs. We learned that a recruiter’s toughest problem was building trust and fostering collaboration with internal stakeholders. It was a problem that no applicant tracking system (ATS) came close to solving.

This critical insight led us to design Lever with every stakeholder in mind. Lever empowers every person in the recruiting ecosystem, bridging the gap between recruiters and hiring managers. We’re reimagining how organizations think about growth, with talent and teamwork at the center. We’re injecting values we respect – collaboration, transparency, and humanity – into the software that will power the next generation of companies.

Lever's product is leagues ahead of the competitors. Why is now the right time to join? We have a strong foundational team in place, and the platform and funding are secure. We entered the market at the right time when recruiting was at a critical inflection point (and continuing to grow 12-15% y/y). Now we're looking for top technical talent to help us scale as we move up-market.

Recruiting is an industry that has been overlooked for many years, and companies are now understanding the value of talent and how critical finding the right talent is to a business. Recruiting is becoming a strategic part of running a company, and Lever is a major player in that strategy.

Engineering at Lever

Engineering team and processes

Some things that make Lever Engineering different:

We are product-focused. We are first and foremost a product company—we believe that user- centric design ultimately leads to the best products.

We're in it to raise the bar for the enterprise software; we're hyper-ambitious, always a bit idealistic, and incredibly supportive of each other.

We build our own framework. Lever is built on our own modern web framework based on NodeJS called Derby. Derby enables us to rapidly develop real-time web apps.

We're committed to open source—it's in our DNA, we built our own open source framework for building apps that we use to build our product. Many members of our team routinely push to our own and community node modules.

Because of the nature of our stack, every engineer has the opportunity to move around and pick the projects they're passionate about working on. All of our product engineers are full stack. Platform includes devops, scaling, and any work on our OSS frameworks.

We are working on planning and building the next generation of Lever’s infrastructure and have an extremely solid base to work with. We use Chef and Terraform to manage our infrastructure.

We actually implement DevOps. Infrastructure is heavily involved with Product, and Product is involved with Infrastructure. We assist with planning, we pair together, and we communicate and share progress with the greater team. No projects are planned behind closed doors, reviews are done with cross-functional teams.

User experience focus - use of design thinking to create infrastructure that not only benefits us as a team, but Lever employees and our customers as a whole. We make sure that what we’re building makes sense for all of our users, be it internal or external.

Technical Challenges

Customers need to manage and search large amounts of data, require stringent access controls, and a huge variety of tools to support everything from finding a candidate to interviewing them to sending them an offer. And we need to be able to provide robust reporting tools on all of it.

Supporting and building that breadth of functionality on a real-time collaborative platform while keeping the entire app performant, secure, and most of all pleasant-to-use is a constant challenge.

Projects you might work on
  • We built a complex availability calendar for scheduling interviews with events and room availability loaded from multiple providers, conflict warnings, drag-and-drop, and live updates as interviewers are reordered and updated.

  • Overhauling our access control system to support multiple levels of access to sensitive information, team & department-level access, and restrictions so that new admins couldn’t see their own feedback. And all the data model design, performance optimization, and knowledge-sharing that went along with it.

Working at Lever

We’re committed to creating an environment where “Leveroos” can bring their whole selves to work each day. We believe in keeping promises to customers and our team alike, continuously raising the bar, and making sure our team can do the best work of their careers at Lever. We care deeply about developing a strong culture, fostering diversity & inclusion, and growing our startup into a truly great company.

We are intentional about supporting an inclusive environment by being a place that: 1. Respects and values the voices and opinions of Leveroos 2. Is committed to making sure LeverHQ is safe and that Leveroos can bring their authentic selves to work. 3. Keeps empathy at the core of all that we do, enduring that no Lever feels that their experience isn’t being considered.

Our engineering team is different in that we hire people who like to work with people. You would have a hard time getting hired at Lever if all you were interested in was like technical problems or specifically, which technology you're working with. Everyone who we hire wants to solve real human problems and likes to work with other people. So, we work a lot more collaboratively than you might see at a typical engineering team. - Rachael Stedman, Engineering Manager

The people at Lever are some of the most passionate, cohesive, collaborative, inspiring people I've ever worked with. I think that's what originally made me found this company was how impressed I was with my co-founders Nate and Randall, and we've really just tried to maintain that spirit as we've scaled. - Sarah Nahm, CEO & Founder

I think at Lever in multiple ways we try and create an environment in which every employee can feel welcomed, can feel like they belong, can feel like they do their best work and that happens at sort of the macro level with our employee resource groups and other types of resource that we make available. What gives me the most pleasure is seeing it happen on a day to day basis and the individual interactions and relationships that we all have with one another. - Leela Srinivasan, CMO
