Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team works in two week sprints using our own ever-evolving flavor of agile. Before a sprint, the product and design teams work on a user- and design-specification. At the beginning of the sprint, engineering joins in to collaborate on a technical specification and at the end of each sprint, the whole company comes together for a demo and a retrospective.

During any given sprint, engineers work closely with the designer and the relevant parties from other areas of the company to drive progress. As a team, we leverage pull-requests on GitHub for code reviews, but also encourage pair programming as needed in order to ensure code-quality and knowledge transfer.

Technical Challenges

As an engineering team that is pre-Alpha and derives a lot of direction from our users, we don't entirely know the scope of the technical challenges that we'll have to solve in the future. At present, many of our most interesting challenges fall within our data-tier with the challenges elsewhere mostly falling in the realm of ensuring forward compatibility.

Projects you might work on
  • Our front-end is built on Next.js, React, and TypeScript. We leverage static site generation wherever possible alongside a combination of server-side and client-side rendering. As we drive toward our Alpha and Beta releases, the focus is to establish a stable base of healthy abstractions upon which we can build our ever-evolving user interface with baked in security, accessibility, and performance.

  • Our core service layer is built upon Java and Spring, leveraging a hybrid monolithic and microservice architecture. At this point in our development, managing multiple deployments of distinct services provides limited value. In order to follow a microservice architecture without the infrastructure overhead, we have a composite service that ties together a number of services with low levels of coupling.

  • Our data tier leverages Apache Spark running serverless in AWS - we use Scala along with some scripting to ingest, align, enrich, and unify multiple external data sources. The batched data is then joined with manually curated data from our internal investment research team and used to annotate data from additional external investment data sources.

  • Within our core service layer lives our Recommendation and Discovery engine - arguably the most complex of our internal projects at present. This service extrapolates data from a variety of graphs, aligns that data with user preferences and activity and generates a list of recommendation scores along with a weighted aggregate score in order for each user's experience to feel like a carefully curated one based on minimally invasive interactions for user preference collection.
