Lonsdale Investment Technology
For society to prosper, capital must be directed to investments that fuel innovation. We are an ambitious new fintech company that helps RIA's, FO's, and others access alternative investments in smarter ways, building clever access products for people and providing context on what others are doing and why. This space will have trillions come into it the next decade. If executed right, it will transform private markets investing and direct tens of billions of dollars a year towards the world’s most innovative entrepreneurs and other useful ends.
Why join us?
Much of our team, including engineers, come from financial institutions or fintech companies. Despite having an engineering team of only 6 (including management), we have representation from Addepar and Blackrock in addition to other major tech companies like Palantir.
Despite being pre-series A, we're already backed by a major VC firm with a Forbes 100 Midas List member and serial entrepreneur as our CEO and Chairman.
Engineering at Lonsdale Investment Technology
Our engineering team works in two week sprints using our own ever-evolving flavor of agile. Before a sprint, the product and design teams work on a user- and design-specification. At the beginning of the sprint, engineering joins in to collaborate on a technical specification and at the end of each sprint, the whole company comes together for a demo and a retrospective.
During any given sprint, engineers work closely with the designer and the relevant parties from other areas of the company to drive progress. As a team, we leverage pull-requests on GitHub for code reviews, but also encourage pair programming as needed in order to ensure code-quality and knowledge transfer.
As an engineering team that is pre-Alpha and derives a lot of direction from our users, we don't entirely know the scope of the technical challenges that we'll have to solve in the future. At present, many of our most interesting challenges fall within our data-tier with the challenges elsewhere mostly falling in the realm of ensuring forward compatibility.
Our front-end is built on Next.js, React, and TypeScript. We leverage static site generation wherever possible alongside a combination of server-side and client-side rendering. As we drive toward our Alpha and Beta releases, the focus is to establish a stable base of healthy abstractions upon which we can build our ever-evolving user interface with baked in security, accessibility, and performance.
Our core service layer is built upon Java and Spring, leveraging a hybrid monolithic and microservice architecture. At this point in our development, managing multiple deployments of distinct services provides limited value. In order to follow a microservice architecture without the infrastructure overhead, we have a composite service that ties together a number of services with low levels of coupling.
Our data tier leverages Apache Spark running serverless in AWS - we use Scala along with some scripting to ingest, align, enrich, and unify multiple external data sources. The batched data is then joined with manually curated data from our internal investment research team and used to annotate data from additional external investment data sources.
Within our core service layer lives our Recommendation and Discovery engine - arguably the most complex of our internal projects at present. This service extrapolates data from a variety of graphs, aligns that data with user preferences and activity and generates a list of recommendation scores along with a weighted aggregate score in order for each user's experience to feel like a carefully curated one based on minimally invasive interactions for user preference collection.
Working at Lonsdale Investment Technology
At LIT, we have four core values that describe our
scrappy startup culture better than any blurb we could write...
Lead by making - We are a company of builders. We champion work that drives outcomes, not the volume of output. Push yourself and each other by using your craft to explore, test, and validate ideas early and often. Fail fast. You don’t always need to be right, just pushing us forward by doing.
Problem solving over politics - The best ideas should always win, regardless of where they come from. Humility is critically important and there is no room for egos. Our success is dependent on the best ideas being voiced, prioritized and executed on.
Communicate openly - We are a company that deeply values transparency, openness, and feedback. We invest in building trust and respect amongst our colleagues so that we can communicate in a way that helps each other grow every day.
Enjoy the journey - We are solving very complex problems, there are going to be many twists, turns, and bumps along the way. Remember each day to pause, appreciate, and enjoy the journey and the fortune we have to get to work on hard problems with smart, talented, and interesting people.
We value diversity of thought and believe that people with different journeys bring creativity and alternative ways of problem solving that enrich the experience of building a company together.
We believe that great work is the byproduct of great team dynamics, trust building, and open and honest feedback. We’ve put a lot of effort into creating an onboarding experience that helps foster learning, open communication and the development of trust. We know that the more comfortable people are with sharing their unique experience, background, and point of view, the better product and company we’ll build together.
We are a small (but mighty) 6 person engineering team and, while we don’t have many formal resources or activities implemented thus far, we encourage and will sponsor any form of community involvement, conference attendance, and mentorship programs to provide employees with the support and mentorship they need to succeed. We also have a diverse network of advisors that we’re always looking to grow in support of the needs of the team.
As part of our commitment to an inclusive workplace, we are happy to offer prospective engineers the chance to connect with our engineering employees who come from underrepresented backgrounds. It’s a way to get a better sense of our team and what it might be like to work with us.
If you’re interested in connecting with our team, be sure to bring this up during one of our introductory calls!
We have an unlimited vacation policy and, while we don't have any official minimums in place, we recognize that preventing employees from becoming burnt out by ensuring they take the time that they need actually drives the product and company further, faster.
We value team bonding and collaboration and just wrapped on of our team off-sites in Austin, Texas (it was hot and humid, but great to have the whole team together!)
Having gotten started during Covid, we are just starting to have the opportunity for in-person team activities, but have had socially distant lunches, remote happy hours, and are getting a remote game-night off the ground!
