Our Records Management System is improving transparency and accuracy within report writing which can help promote law enforcement accountability, while also providing communities more reliable and useful access to information they need.

Engineering at Mark43

Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team operates on a project-based structure with two week sprints and lightweight Agile ceremonies. Teams are assembled at the beginning of the quarter and each engineer works on one or two projects throughout the course of a quarter. We utilize peer code review before merging code to our master branch and QA verifies changes before merging. Sprint planning starts off the sprint and a quick retro ends each sprint. Major code deploys happen quarterly and patches happen weekly as needed. We have a dedicated scrummaster and each project has representation from engineering, product, and qa.

Technical Challenges

As the premier platform for First Responders, we deal with unique challenges in a mission-critical system. From the moment a citizen dials 911, our people and platform work diligently to identify the caller's needs, determine their location, and get the right first responders on the way to help. We have unique technical challenges resulting from the occasionally connected nature of our First Responder devices in the field, the intricacies of pin-pointing the location a caller with an emergency, showing dispatchers all of the events going on in their city, processing reports for first responders, and managing dozens of live integrations with 3rd parties who support our first responders. All of this happens 24/7/365 with no downtime windows.

Projects you might work on
  • You would directly impact how our customers use the data they collect through our compliance dashboard. This tool provides a way to aggregate information from several months worth of reports, so that it can be shared with state and federal level agencies. This data is what drives government statistics on crime related domestic violence, stop reporting, and other critical issues, which can lead to improvements in policing practices or new legislation.

  • You would help us scale by enabling our customers to tailor our product to their needs without in turn needing to scale the codebase and engineering team. How? Working on this project involves systemic, abstract thinking about what application platforms are and how integrity is maintained during development. We are figuring out ways to allow users to build a data graph without artificial limitations. And, we are giving users the ability to dictate application logic without the need for a software engineering skillset.
