Engineering at Mason

Engineering team and processes

Engineering process: We use a lightweight Kanban-style process and release frequently (OS updates, front end, and services). Independent components rev out of band as needed, and we're working towards the dream of continuous deployment.

Standards: We use standards where they make sense. We write one-pagers for significant features or changes, have them peer-reviewed, and own testing, implementation, peer code review, and deployment.

Teamwork and fun: Engineers are encouraged to learn and experiment with new technologies, and teach others. We demo our work regularly at the all-company meeting Show and tell. We hold quarterly hackathons and encourage everyone to get their hands dirty — at least a couple of our current roadmap items are straight from one such event!

Technical Challenges

Our product is mobile infrastructure-as-a-service. Consequently, from services to storage infrastructure to logistics to Android-compatible devices to firmware engineering our projects involve a variety of interesting and challenging work. A lot of our focus is around automation. Below is a selection of some of the fun challenges we work on (many are yet to be built!).

Mason OS and Core Apps: * Management and unification of multiple OS source trees and integrating our core feature set across all of them * Integration of a build pipeline in our production workflow * On device apps/services for remote control, log retrieval, push notifications, secure data storage, certificates, etc.

Developer (customer) productivity: * Command line interface to a variety of platform functionality * Automated generation of documentation of hundreds of feature points within a large, evolving source tree * Zero touch provisioning — automation of the registration and customer-specific setup of devices at scale (e.g. turn on a device and watch it automatically transform into a custom bar code scanner device)

Backend, Devops and Scaling: * Firmware and app update services to handle a projected half a million devices over the next 2-3 years * Services to handle metrics, analytics, license management, audit events, etc. * Migration to containerization of all of our backend services

Frontend: * ReactJS dashboard to list and map large numbers of devices * Searching, tagging, drag and drop deployment support of devices * Device fulfilment dynamic charting * Tracking and visualizing live devices in the field

Projects you might work on
  • Controller: This is one of our core product offerings. We build OS services, apps, back end services, web dashboards, command line tools and scale infrastructure to support firmware and application updates over the air for a projected half million devices over the next couple of years. It is also about enabling customers to have complete control and visibility into their device fleets out in the field via a full-featured API and features such as remote control, optional device geo-tracking, device log extraction, audit logs, and a variety of others!

  • Creator: This is a future-looking product that is all about speeding up the process of designing a custom device and accessories without dealing with manual/inefficient processes.

  • Commerce: This is a future-looking product which is around speeding up and automating the whole device ordering, fulfillment and logistics part of our business. Imagine clicking a few buttons and ordering scores of devices to add to your fleet and managing their lifecycle from ordering, shipment tracking, and delivery all the way through RMA, support and device upgrades.
