Engineering at MasterClass

Engineering team and processes

Our engineering department is structured to help us best deliver services and content to our customers, and is composed of Growth Engineering, Core Product Engineering and Platform Engineering where all teams work across . Each of these areas is responsible for specific objectives and key results (OKRs), where we work closely with product management and designers to define the OKRs.

We work together in pods which are aligned to projects on a two-week sprint cadence, and meet daily to ensure progress. We collaborate through tooling such as Confluence, JIRA, Figma, GitHub, and Slack, and because of our mature DevOps processes, we're able to push to production multiple times a day. Our teams are enabled to work quickly and independently, especially because of our high velocity and need to experiment on user features and experiences. Since we are a relatively small team, we are looking for people who can wear multiple hats and drive cross-functional discussions on a regular basis.

Technical Challenges

We are a fast moving company that leverages a number of third party services and performance is often a significant challenge for us, especially as we experiment with user features and experiences or are actively being attacked by bots.

Meeting performance expectations is important in serving our high quality content to our customers. You'll get to work on these scale issues, distributed compute, and even artificial intelligence to fight bots!

We're also constantly trying to understand our customer base using experimentation and machine learning. Our high quality content is why customers love us, and we need to continue to help them to learn from the best in the world.

Projects you might work on
  • You'll be working on some interesting, high-profile projects to help us prepare for scale directly proportional to customer demand and global expansion, using technologies such as as GraphQL, FastJSON, in a world-class, distributed computing environment, and Lambdas on a serverless architecture.

  • You'll be working on our API strategy to help us decouple and breakdown our monolithic application from our front end channels, including web (e.g. React), mobile (iOS/Android), and devices (tvOS).

  • You'll be helping us reach more customers by expanding access to our content on mobile and device platforms at a global scale as well as machine learning to personalize the experience.

This company was founded on the belief that education is for everyone. We have committed $2,000,000 in funding towards creating content that inspires and educates in practices for social justice and against systemic racism. This programming will be freely available.

  1. We will amplify diverse instructor voices

Representation matters. Our instructor roster will exceed the diversity of our society. Black voices will be consistently represented in each of our subject categories. Our goal is to achieve this representation through the next 200 instructors we bring to the platform.

  1. We will help build the inclusive world that we wish to inhabit

We will develop and invest in additional strategies to build a diverse workplace, one that is consistent with the diversity of the countries where we are based.

  1. We will add our support to the causes that champion diversity, equity, and inclusion

We have committed up to $500,000 a year for donations and donation matching, directed by our employees, to individuals and organizations that are committed to supporting, advancing, and valuing Black lives.

  1. We will create a company culture that further nourishes diversity, equity, and inclusion

We will hire dedicated resources to focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion to support our employee DEI group and our broader team's efforts in this area.

  1. We will ensure the voices of everyone on our team can be heard

We commit to giving our team a full day off for state and federal elections - to ensure they have the time to cast their votes and help others do the same.
