Role Description

Who we are:

MasterClass is transforming online education by enabling anyone in the world to learn from the very best. We are deconstructing what makes an actor able to cry on demand, how an athlete defies gravity, and what it takes to write a bestseller. Our online learning content is available to students anywhere anytime, which supports our mission to ignite the greatness in others.

We are a quickly growing VC-funded startup based in San Francisco, with additional offices in Los Angeles. We have created online classes taught by famous masters— Gordon Ramsay, Serena Williams, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Sara Blakely, David Sedaris, Bobbi Brown, Timbaland, Anna Wintour and many more to come.

Since launching in 2015, we have been growing our team. Apply now to find out more about what we are doing behind the scenes.

The Role:

Success for MasterClass means success for the number of people actively engaging in life-long learning. There are two basic ingredients to grow that number: first, increase the quantity and breadth of courses offered. Very Competent People are on that. Second, we have to ensure that MasterClass is putting its best foot forward; that the right audience is learning about the right classes, at the right time, and that when they arrive to learn more, our pitch is both compelling and clear. As Growth Engineers, that’s our job.

We run a ton of experiments. What for? So we can find ever-better ways to explain the product. So we can build excitement for lifelong learning. So that people are onboarded effectively and hit the ground running. So when a new class comes out that they’d be interested in, users know about it. If you love coming up with lots of experiment ideas, putting your chips down in ideas you believe in, then owning the “instrument → implement → analyze → productionize” journey, you’ll have a good time at MasterClass.

Growth Engineering teams tend to be faster-moving, scrappier, amenable to idiosyncratic weirdos with “that one hair-brained theory” we they’re always trying to prove out. It’s a good role for folks who want to be “very good (top 25%) at two or more things,” per Marc Andreessen’s advice, with one foot in the engineering world and the other one deeply fascinated by the study of human behavior through sociology, psychology or economics.

Responsibilities of the role:

  • Drive engineering growth efforts within a team in partnership with a Growth Product Manager
  • Ideate, propose, implement, and analyze experiments that move MasterClass forward.
  • Actively contribute to process and technology improvements by improving things like our A/B testing framework, analytics, or component library.
  • Mentoring junior developers through discussions, code reviews, and pairing.

Our Growth Tech Stack:

  • Rails
  • React (with a pretty solid set of reusable experiment components)
  • Iterable
  • Homebrewed Experiment Framework (prototyping something like Optimizely Full Stack now)
  • Native (award-winning) iOS and Android Apps, as well as modern TV platforms.

Requirements:

  • Typically 7+ years of experience in a software engineering role
  • 1+ year on a growth-style team
  • Familiarity with experimentation, SQL, and basic statistics
  • T-shaped web full-stackiness: comfortable contributing in both front-end and back-end code, but fine to prefer one over the other.

At MasterClass, we believe we put our best work forward when our employees bring together ideas that are diverse in thought. We are proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state or local law. In addition, MasterClass will provide reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities. If you have a disability or special need, we would like to know how we can better accommodate you.
