Role Description

Your work will focus on the next paradigm in autonomous aerial transportation using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). You will lead a small team of GNC engineers and be engaged in developing our flight control algorithms, state estimators, enhanced features like detect and avoid, precision landing and take-off system, increasing efficiency for longer-range flights, and improving safety systems. As autonomous UAVs are an evolving field, we’re seeking a talented and experienced engineering leader with the ability to rapidly learn new technologies and integrate these into product roadmaps.

You will Leverage your expertise in aircraft and system dynamics, control theory, estimation, and simulation to architect guidance, navigation, and control algorithms and develop a dynamics and controls model that enables accurate software-in-the-loop (SITL) simulations. Provide support for Matternet’s existing open-source flight software stack. Investigate and diagnose aircraft issues by analyzing logs, designing experiments and test procedures, and performing simulations when needed. Evaluate emerging technologies, sensors, and controller updates to improve aircraft control and performance in all phases of flight as well as system-level reliability. Work closely with a multidisciplinary engineering team to design, develop, and test a highly reliable, performant, and safe aircraft. Lead a small team of full-time engineers and manage consultants.

Requirements A minimum of 10 years of experience in the GNC product lifecycle including conceptualization, development, integration, test, and deployment of dynamics, control theory and state estimators for 6 DOF aircraft. A minimum of 10 years of experience in algorithm development and simulation frameworks such as MATLAB and Simulink. Familiarity reading software in C and C++ for embedded systems. Developing safety-critical systems in compliance with certification requirements such as DO-178C and presenting technical implementations to regulatory agencies. Familiarity with multi-modality sensor fusion and INS/GPS navigation system development. Expertise with a trade study, selection, and integration of aircraft sensors and receivers for example GPS, IMU, barometer, LIDAR, RADAR, UWB, and INS.

Great Additions: Experience writing software in Python, C, and C++. Familiarity with ardupilot or experience in flight control as applied to quadcopters. Experience with autonomous air, land, sea-based vehicles.
