Imagine if every time you went to the doctor you paid cash up front before you were treated, where every time you rented an apartment you paid 2 years cash up front, or where your monthly paycheck was frequently delayed for months at a time. Then imagine if you had no access to loans, credit cards, or even bank accounts. This is everyday life for over 3 billion people in developing countries around the world and we are on a mission to change it.

Migo provides a cloud-based platform that enables banks and merchants to offer credit to customers in countries without functioning credit bureaus. We build ML algorithms on customer phone records, bank records, and payment transactions to assess credit risk, along with full automation to manage the credit application and delivery process. The net result is a seamless user experience where customers of our partner institutions can apply for and receive a loan in less than 60 seconds or make instant purchases with virtual or physical credit cards.

Although we just raised a Series A and have partnerships that provide an immediate audience of tens of millions of consumers, our company is still at a formative stage where you can get in on the ground floor and have immense impact. Come join us on what promises to be a remarkable journey bringing financial services to billions of consumers in need around the world!

Engineering at Migo

Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team consists of seasoned systems and machine learning engineers. The systems engineers own the core microservices infrastructure, while the machine learning engineers own the data science microservice(s) deployed within. The engineering team also leads local deployment teams in creating and owning integrations/frontends which hook into the core system. In terms of processes, we run a scrum process via Clubhouse at weekly meetings supplemented with daily standups and most communication / technical discussions on Slack. This works well for us to remain agile since the team is small and seasoned. All code changes run through peer reviews as well as continuous integration and multiple test environments.

Technical Challenges

One interesting challenge at Migo is that the need for defensive, robust, and scalable programming is much more apparent when dealing with developing countries as the systems we integrate with might not have the level of technology standards as we do in the US. In addition, building packaged financial services globally comes with challenges of security, portability, and performance, forcing our designs to be clean and highly reusable across countries and languages.

Projects you might work on
  • Architecting microservices for better modularity/performance.

  • Integration work with new payment processors / banks / telcos / etc.

  • Security improvement around data transfers within/across countries.

  • Bayesian modeling for credit scoring and prediction of loan default.

  • Manifold learning for disparate datasets of different dimensionality.

  • Social graph modeling, reputation systems, fraud detection.
