Motion was founded in 2017 to build the first hospital system that is a software company. The early team is experienced entrepreneurs from across tech and healthcare (Collective Health, Omada, NASA, Uber, Warby Parker, and Kaiser) and we raised a large seed round in late July from Thrive Capital and other top investors. We are are already delivering care out of our beta clinic in SOMA and quickly building tools to enable faster, cheaper, more accurate, and more effective diagnosis and treatment. In the same way that Amazon started with books instead of everything, we are starting with injuries and body pain (musculoskeletal care), a $200 billion market, as our first vertical.

Engineering at Motion

Engineering team and processes

We work on a weekly sprint cycle, reviewing on Friday afternoon accomplishments and goals for the following week. We also do a brief daily standup to check-in. Each engineer has ownership for the project they are working on. They are expected to set specific, aggressive weekly goals and execute on them. Every engineer is expected to join, as appropriate, for architectural reviews and participate in code reviews (all code must be reviewed as part of the pull request).

Technical Challenges
  • We need to capture and store our medical data with enough structure to be able to use it to drive learning but at the same time support that fact that the human body has a huge amount of variability with almost unlimited edge cases. That data also is captured from a large set of sources each with their own confidence level, error bars, and other factors.

  • We need to build decision engines to power triage and diagnosis recommendations in real time that can work with clinicians flow and processes.

  • Build a flexible care engine to allow dynamic generation, updates and tracking of patient's treatment plans and progress, evaluating that progress against personalized projections to flag possible misdiagnosis and treatment failures.

Projects you might work on
  • Architect and build our core backend services, including user management, authentication, data storage etc.

  • Design and deploy engineering tooling for build, test and deploy processes.

  • Architect and build the v1 of our React/React-Native apps for our members.

    While we don’t have a formal number of paid vacation days, we feel taking vacation is critical to everyone’s health and highly encourage you to do so. If you don’t take at least 10 days a year, someone will come and poke you until you do. In addition, the offices are generally closed for national holidays and for extra time around the end of the year.
