Our engineering org is relatively flat. We use weekly sprints, however the backend team functions with adhoc v-teams depending on feature size and scope. Each team is free to organize the day-to-day work coordination as they see fit, whether that is daily standups, or communication via work item movement and Slack, or somewhere in between. Though we do apply agile, we apply only as much process as is beneficial to us as a team - no process for process's sake.
We also follow a DevOps model, and function as a combined engineering organization. Our code is continuously integrated and deployed, and must include appropriate tests from the developer. We have a high bar for quality, and take it very seriously. We utilize peer reviews and automated tools such as SonarQube to ensure that everyone is on the same page.
Our services are on the most recent version of dotnet core. We run on docker, on Ubuntu machines, in production. This often puts us on the cutting or bleeding edge of tech products, as the number of companies that run at our scale - let alone on our foundation - can be counted on two hands. We have a never-ending set of interesting problems, for many of which we are setting a new industry standard.
We handle upwards of 100 billion requests a day, in real-time, and with an SLA of zero data loss.
A real-time costing system: building a system to measure what a request costs us in terms of CPU utilization and data storage, converting that into dollars, and then reporting that into a database in order to generate accurate costing information for each of our customers.
Profile storage: building a system to correlate information about a customer's user across their various touchpoints that is query-able and robust enough to happen occasional out-of-order messaging.
GDPR compliance for customers: architecting and implementing a system to enable our customers to meet GDPR compliance, including tracking consent requests and handling user data deletion.
