Proving unique value to companies — Hundreds of companies are increasingly realizing how valuable the data is within email, contacts, and calendars and are rapidly innovating on top of it. Each of those applications needs integration with the existing status quo, and we’re pretty much the only one that offers that integration.

Providing just the raw interface to the old protocols is just the first step. We are also working towards building higher-level APIs that provide a lot of the common analysis and features most of our customers re-invent over and over again. Building an ecosystem of higher-level tools on top of the raw data will only accelerate the pace of development.

Big opportunity — Email is the largest communication network in the world. The fundamental usefulness of being able to asynchronously communicate with anyone else outside your immediate network will ensure email and the tools surrounding it will stay for years to come.

The contents of email, calendar, and contacts hold an unprecedented amount of data both in sheer quantity and richness. The problem has been that accessing, understanding, and effectively using that data has dramatically lagged behind its usage.

Believe in our mission — Our long term mission is to build the kind of organization that allows us to make the world more like the world we want to live in. To do that, we need to make a product that provides value to our customers and allows us to grow the company. We support a future that is more diverse, inclusive, and equitable, and see Nylas as a way to bring the world closer to that future.

Our immediate goals are around making business communication easer to use for everyone. While we have the technical capacity to build an email chat bot, or the next great scheduling widget, we believe greater impact can come from better, smarter, faster tooling that enables countless more to innovate on top of.

We also see building a company as a parallel excuse to build a team, culture, and environment that we idealize towards and can, in turn, use as a demonstrable example to others on a better way to work.
