  • Proving unique value to companies — Hundreds of companies are increasingly realizing how valuable the data is within email, contacts, and calendars and are rapidly innovating on top of it. Each of those applications needs integration with the existing status quo, and we’re pretty much the only one that offers that integration.

    Providing just the raw interface to the old protocols is just the first step. We are also working towards building higher-level APIs that provide a lot of the common analysis and features most of our customers re-invent over and over again. Building an ecosystem of higher-level tools on top of the raw data will only accelerate the pace of development.

  • Big opportunity — Email is the largest communication network in the world. The fundamental usefulness of being able to asynchronously communicate with anyone else outside your immediate network will ensure email and the tools surrounding it will stay for years to come.

    The contents of email, calendar, and contacts hold an unprecedented amount of data both in sheer quantity and richness. The problem has been that accessing, understanding, and effectively using that data has dramatically lagged behind its usage.

To do that, we need to make a product that provides value to our customers and allows us to grow the company. Technical Challenges

The average email account contains more data than in most startups' entire databases, and big data has been the primary scaling bottleneck we've faced so far. Plus, speed and availability requirements are high. While our first API features have been focused on simplifying the process of accessing the data in email, contacts, and calendars, we have lots of ideas for how to leverage this basic data to provide more powerful features for our customers.

Even frontend engineers have the opportunity to innovate here, by building apps that help folks see the power of our APIs, building tools to help organizations manage their apps, and building open source widgets that developers can integrate into their apps. Our long-term vision is to make the world more productive, tying together data from different sources and making it easier to analyze and extract meaning.
