Why join us?

  • Proving unique value to companies — Hundreds of companies are increasingly realizing how valuable the data within email, contacts and calendars is and are rapidly innovating on top of it. Each and every one of those applications needs integration with the existing status quo, and we’re pretty much the only one that offers that integration.

Providing just the raw interface to the old protocols is just the first step. We are also working towards building higher level APIs that provide a lot of the common analysis and features most of our customers re-invent over and over again. Building a ecosystem of higher level tools on top of the raw data will only accelerate the pace of development.

  • Big opportunity — Email is the largest communication network in the world and is the lingua franca of business. The fundamental usefulness of being able to asynchronously communicate with anyone else outside your immediate network will ensure email and the tools surrounding it will stay for years to come.

The contents of email, calendar, and contacts hold an unprecedented amount of data both in sheer quantity and richness. The problem has been that accessing, understanding, and effectively using that data has dramatically lagged behind its usage.

  • Believe in our mission — Our long term mission is to build the kind of organization that allows us to make the world more like the world we want to live in. To do that, we need to make a product that provides value to our customers and allows us to grow the company. We support a future that is more diverse, inclusive, and equitable, and see Nylas as a way to bring the world closer to that future.

Our immediate goals are around making business communication easer to use for everyone. While we have the technical capacity to build an email chat bot, or the next great scheduling widget, we believe greater impact can come from better, smarter, faster tooling that enables countless more to innovate on top of.

We also see building a company as a parallel excuse to build a team, culture, and environment that we idealize towards and can, in turn, use as a demonstrable example to others on a better way to work.

  • Diverse team and great culture — Our team (https://www.nylas.com/team/) is roughly equal by identified gender (including engineering). Read more about our commitment to diversity here: https://www.keyvalues.com/nylas. The team is comprised of startup founders; Debian contributors; {{Large Tech Corp®}} alums; MIT, Columbia, Yale, CMU, Olin, alums; and a professional dancer from the San Francisco Ballet. We actively and regularly work with the entire team to shape our culture to our ideal of honesty, transparency, individual empowerment, and kindness.

We strongly select for people that have a growth mindset, have enough engineering experience to architect complex systems, have a track record of managing your own projects, and have a strong sense of practical shippability over engineering purity. We also aspire towards a natural tendency towards humbleness in one’s own abilities, and towards an innate desire to pass that knowledge onwards.

Our team collaboratively wrote about our values, benefits, perks, and published them in our open source handbook (https://github.com/nylas/handbook). Read that to learn more about Nylas. Some highlights include regular retrospectives to continuously adjust and improve our culture, a mandatory 2-week contiguous vacation each year (along with an unlimited vacation policy) to emphatically value happiness (and minimize our “bus factor”), and catered lunch every day at our SF office. The team typically eats together and this is a great way for us to hang out and get to know each other better as people.

Technical Challenges

The average email account contains more data than in most startups' entire databases, and big data has been the primary scaling bottleneck we've faced so far. Plus, speed and availability requirements are high. While our first API features have been focused on simplifying the process of accessing the data in email, contacts, and calendars, we have lots of ideas for how to leverage this basic data to provide more powerful features for our customers.

Even frontend engineers have the opportunity to innovate here, by building apps that help folks see the power of our APIs, building tools to help organizations manage their apps, and building open source widgets that developers can integrate into their apps. Our long-term vision is to be the communications layer for the Internet, tying together data from different sources and making it easier to analyze and extract meaning.
