At Outpost Games, we're building a technology platform to turn every player into a performer through tools, APIs, and game integrations. To showcase our platform, we're also creating a multiplayer survival game, titled SOS, which is designed from the ground up to be as thrilling to watch as it is to play.

Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team values curiosity, collaboration, and simplicity.

Curiosity– We find it correlates highly with growth, success, and happiness. The curiosity to learn new tools, languages, or approaches, and applied to problems, unexpected behavior, or seemingly odd code.

Collaboration– We actively seek input from our peers, especially diverse opinions. We hire open-minded individuals, who will speak up about weaknesses, scrutinize designs and systems that don't meet product needs, engineering principles, or introduce competing standards. Constructive feedback is desired and welcome; purposeless negativity is not tolerated.

Simplicity– Complexity increases the effort cost of changes and risk of breakages over time, hindering maintainability and leading to unreliable systems. We use stable, proven tools for basics, so we can spend our energy on the risks necessary to innovate. We use powerful tools and build for leverage, reusing where there's nothing to be gained from reinventing.

Technical Challenges

Technical challenges on the platform engineering team fall into a few areas: • Modern, SPAs for browser-based clients; including our destination website, native apps, and an upcoming mobile app. • Designing and building clean APIs for 1st and 3rd party clients • Real-time event processing systems that power audience interactivity, such as sentiment and voting. • Data processing pipelines– non-realtime streaming and batch pipelines powering discovery and analytics for streamers.

Projects you might work on
  • Iterations of our real-time feedback aggregation algorithm (a.k.a. Live Audience Dynamics), processing thousands of events per second, at millisecond latency, to provide players and performers with the feeling of audience presence.

  • A highly-available distributed system for routing transient and persistent events between platform clients and backend services, over intermittent or persistent connections. Scalable to millions of events per second.

  • New real-time interactions, such as the next versions of voting, working with our SOS game team or 3rd party developers to meet product needs.

  • Implement support for new authentication providers for Hero.tv; we have first-class support for Twitch, how about YouTube? Or Mixer? Or ... ?
