Role Description

The Role

In your role as a Staff Engineer, you will plan, design, develop, deploy, and operate infrastructure services in the cloud. You will assume technical ownership of entire projects, applications, and services and help shape the future of our cloud infrastructure services and development processes. You care deeply about technical and architectural excellence and will partner with stakeholders across the company to develop infrastructure that fits both the problems at hand and aligns with long-term visions and roadmaps.

Core Responsibilities

Assume end-to-end ownership of entire projects, applications and services; from design to development, deployment, and operations. Promote high standards in terms of adherence to best practices. Lead by example in relation to code consistency, performance, robustness, scalability, intuitive APIs and libraries, all of which are core tenets for our solutions. Stay abreast of state of the art technology and engineering developments. Steer towards good tool and technology choices that both fit the problem at hand and long-term visions. Help shape and promote sound engineering practices and software development processes, within and across teams, in an agile, iterative, fail-fast environment. Coach and mentor; perform peer code reviews and engineering reviews as well as share and promote learnings across the organization (e.g. through internal talks, blogs, etc.) Partner with product owners to develop a deep understanding of stakeholder’s business problems, and translate to architectural and technical decisions. Level up our platform including enhancing our test coverage, observability, alerting, and performance.

What We Value

Extensive experience designing, building and operating cloud infrastructure and scalable distributed systems, and a strong track record of working directly with AWS, Azure and Puppet. Experience as a technical leader with proven success in fast-paced, agile software engineering teams. Desire to solve complex problems in an iterative fashion, delivering frequent tactical wins while making progress towards long-term strategic goals. Comfort with owning and implementing solutions all the way from initial business problem through concept and vision, design, architecture, iterative development and delivery. Strong coding skills (Go is required, Java is preferred). Experience working on large scale, distributed infrastructure systems.

About Palantir

Are you an engineer who wants to make an impact? At Palantir, we’re passionate about building software that solves problems. We’re working to build a future in which public institutions, commercial enterprises, and non-profit organizations can use data to function as they were designed — to fulfill the mandates with which they’ve been entrusted, to deliver value to customers, and to distribute aid to those most in need.

Company Culture

The best idea wins. No matter what team you’re on, Palantirians approach every problem with an engineering mindset. We speak up when things aren’t right, evaluate ideas on their merits, and fix what’s broken. All voices are equal here — we hire people to have an opinion and solve problems, regardless of their role or seniority.

Own the outcome. We are in the business of delivering outcomes. Whether you’re on a dev team, a business team working with customers, or an internal team helping other Palantirians, success isn’t a matter of following procedures or checking boxes — success is delivering something that works. That’s why we work on flat, decentralized teams, each with their own decision-making authority, and empower our people to own their own outcomes.

Focus on the mission. We view software as a means of effecting change in the world, not as an end unto itself. Our mission is to empower our users, who are grappling with hard problems across public health, manufacturing, defense, and disaster relief. We do this by writing software that enables those people to more quickly, easily, and accurately harness data to do their jobs.
