PeerPal is the platform that allows families to discover authentic information about the schools they are interested in. We do this by building software that allows schools to make their community ambassadors available to their prospective families. We launched in September 2019 and over the past year we have worked with over 200 schools throughout the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Why join us?

  • We work with over 200 schools and we are a bootstrapped and profitable company; we fund our own growth effectively and are not reliant on outside capital.

  • This is a great chance for anyone trying to get in on the ground floor of building a rapidly growing startup as we expand from a team of nine to a team of 30 by the end of 2021.

  • You’ll be joining an exceptionally talented team of equals and helping us take charge on the most exciting aspects of our platform, driving massive, measurable value for our customers and we’re just at the first mile marker. We’re a friendly bunch that make big things happen!

Engineering at PeerPal

Engineering team and processes

Our Engineering team operates on two week product-development cycles. Each Cycle Starts with a meeting to discuss what we are trying to build for that cycle and the timeline for each feature. Every morning we have a team standup call where we go over what we’re working on, what we got done, and what we need help on. We use daily Pull Requests to conduct code reviews on Github, to ensure the engineering team is fully synced up. Nearing the end of each cycle, we push all our features to a staging environment where non-technical team members can test the features and give feedback to implement. After implementing the feedback provided from non-technical members, we push the new features into production!

Technical Challenges

One of the biggest challenges that we faced was scaling our infrastructure and handling server-side dependencies across all of our various microservices. To solve this, we made a new git repository to store all of our mongoose schemas, universal functions, and standard emails templates. We are currently in the process of updating our legacy code with the new package.

Projects you might work on
  • You would work on our core product which includes a live widget on schools' websites, the core chat product prospective parents use to chat with the parent ambassadors, and the administrator dashboard to view conversation related data.

  • You would have the opportunity to work on continuously improving our IOS app and rebuilding our android app from scratch using Kotlin.

Working at PeerPal

We love to think of our startup as a collective of individual contributors- with every team member having the opportunity to contribute ideas that can make a significant impact on PeerPal’s direction and trajectory. Everyone who joins has a relatively high level of autonomy over their role. In practice, this means that employees are able to propose and explore new ideas to meet and exceed the organization’s ambitious goals. While we like to remain ambitious, we also actively encourage our team members to have a healthy work life balance. We provide a mattress reimbursement to all our employees so that all of us can get a good night's rest. Additionally, we recommend and encourage all employees to use our company sponsored gym membership so they can remain active and fit. Furthermore, we all come together bi-weekly to do virtual happy hours where we either play some fun games or just relax and talk with each other.
