Engineering at PepsiCo
Most of our engineers and engineering leaders come from the tech and startup world, and our structure reflects that. We develop projects using cross-functional teams consisting of engineers, product managers, UX designers, business owners and other stakeholders; the teams have a great deal of autonomy in defining product roadmap, features, UX, and delivery. Development is highly collaborative, ideas can originate with any team member and are discussed freely.
We use a Lean Software methodology for fast development and rapid iteration. Our devops team has developed fully automated build and deployment, automated testing, and auto scaling. We use JIRA Hr epics and stories, with detailed requirement capture in Confluence. Pull requests are always peer reviewed, and we have dev/sandbox, QA/staging, as well as production environments.
Data and Security: We ingest Terabytes of data every day. Building an efficient infrastructure and ETL pipelines to process this big data is a challenging task. It needs careful planning to eliminate duplicates, incompatible data types, and incorrect data. By taking the advantage of parallel computing, we can improve the efficiency and minimize the latency of the process. The infrastructure is compliant with Information Security policies to store and process sensitive and/or mission-critical data. We implement complex business logic, sometimes using Machine Learning techniques to transform the data into the feature sets our Data Science team needs.
ROI Engine (HUB): We are developing an internal Marketing Mix Modeling solution to address the business needs of determining the media ROI. This helps in optimization as well as better allocation of the media and marketing budgets. It unlocks answers to questions like What are the most important sales drivers? (TV, Social Media, etc), Effect of seasonality on sales (Super Bowl, Extreme Weather, etc) and so on. As part of the HUB projects, we are collecting multiple Terabytes of data every week from our data sources. We build the ETL data pipelines using technologies such as Airflow (Orchestration tool), Snowflake (Data Warehouse), Python, Spark, Kubernetes and many more.
Our Data Platform is the foundation upon which our data engineers build their pipelines and push to consumers which range from data scientists to business users to internal applications. The platform is comprised of multiple layers in the cloud to help aggregate, sort and store information from both our internal sources and external vendors. We are regularly implementing new tools/methodologies to help empower other data engineering efforts.
Marketing Automation is our internal performance marketing platform. It helps empower our marketing team by enabling them to execute and automate a large number of marketing campaigns on our many customer retail platforms (Instacart, Amazon, Walmart etc...) for a large variety of products. The platform has helped to enable a huge increase in advertising performance as well as an increase and scale and scope of our advertising spend.
In addition to the above examples, we are building an ecommerce platform for direct to consumer as well as B2B, order management capability, and mobile applications.
