Out platform gives independent insurance agents the ability to place and manage specialty insurance with their partners. Specialty insurance could be Satellites/Space, Commercial Trucking Fleets, Private Flood, Dealerships or anything that doesn't fit in existing solutions. We are automating and streamlining the specialty insurance industry.

We are the system of record as we create and maintain hundreds of data points for each insured on our platform. PolicyFly assists underwriters with third-party data integrations to ensure they have a 360 degree view of submissions and provides powerful automation capabilities to handle their business processes and document issuance needs.

Active Roles

Why join us?

  • We are a team of engineers that bootstrapped this business to securing 8 contracts with major companies before we went out and got funding! Now with that in the bank, it's time to get our product as tight as possible before ramping up the sales engine.

  • We are managing over $60M in premium, growing at roughly 90% YoY. Our customers love our product and over 45% of our growth originates from existing customer expansion (land and expand)!

  • The majority of the company (including the CEO) are all engineers. Our diverse, prior engineering experiences are injected into the engineering culture to create a truly technology-first company.

Engineering at PolicyFly

Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team operates in a flat, agile structure, supported directly by both technical leaders and project managers. Engineers are empowered to own their own features and contribute across the stack where possible (and are given time to do this!), leading to an abundance of growth opportunities and responsibilities. We leverage a two week sprint structure, using best-in-class Atlassian tooling to orchestrate and manage our sprints. We begin our sprints with a scrub of critical tasks and a retrospective over the last sprint, and end them with a more general engineering scrub, a planning meeting for the next sprint, and a no meeting day of focused crushing. We encourage removing technical debt by dedicating a portion of every other Friday to engineering only tasks, without product intervention. While we love to consider ourselves truly agile, we also do our due diligence up front and complete considerable planning before engaging in an effort. As a fully remote team, we over-communicate where possible and use GitLab for the rest of our Software Development tooling, including MR's and their pipelines for CI/CD, encouraging all engineers to participate in all MR's and the DevOps process directly.

Technical Challenges

We're building a single platform for all the various, disparate types of specialty insurance, leading to challenges around how we model all of this disparate data in one concrete package; how we spin up new lines of insurance quickly and efficiently in our custom low-code environment; how we architect a large, mesh network of decentralized, scalable services for our various integrations; and how we manage real world document generation using an advanced templating engine powering documents that are hundreds of pages long.

Projects you might work on
  • You would get to work on the future of our document management engine, moving deployments from our hands to the hands of our customers directly, all the while ensuring we can handle the scale our customers demand in both throughput and document complexity.

  • You would get to work on our low-code frontend environment that is used to scaffold insurance program applications quickly and efficiently, creating the primitives and building blocks that configuration engineers and customers use on a daily basis.

  • You would get to work on untangling our monolith app, separating out various pieces into isolated, independent microservices that are easier to scale, federate, and manage.

  • You would get to rethink how we display our data from a top-down perspective, redesigning how customers interact with our site and how data is shared between agents on the platform.

Working at PolicyFly

We value independence and proactivity above all else. We are a remote organization that relies on high communication and self-organization to remain aligned and productive. While there is always a vision and leadership, we value those who can work within the lines on their own to achieve that vision, as they see fit. Finally, we embody a scrappy, self-starter organization where everyone contributes wherever they can, whenever they can and are empowered and supported in doing so.

Diversity and Inclusion

Our production team is geographically diverse with a strong female cohort and we are actively looking to grow our diversity as quickly as possible.

We value all voices at PolicyFly, which is reflected in our flat, open structure. Everyone is welcome to voice their opinion in standups, sync meetings, retrospectives, or company retreats, regardless of level or seniority. All opinions are treated with equal weight and the problems of one engineer are seen as the problems of all engineers. We give all engineers an equal chance to raise their concerns and voice their opinions in our biweekly retrospectives, which occur at the start of each of our sprints.

The engineering team is supported by a dedicated, experienced Engineering Manager who exists solely to ensure engineers are comfortable, productive, and growing, and engineering concerns are heard and treated with the same severity as product concerns. This individual is in place to help all underrepresented backgrounds navigate through the company and to ensure they have a dedicated voice to fight for them. Learning is encouraged throughout the entire company, giving everyone a chance to improve their skills and focus on their own career growth and future.

Connect with our team during your hiring process

As part of our commitment to an inclusive workplace, we are happy to offer prospective engineers the chance to connect with our engineering employees who come from underrepresented backgrounds. It’s a way to get a better sense of our team and what it might be like to work with us.

If you’re interested in connecting with our team, be sure to bring this up during one of our introductory calls!
