Polycam lets people capture and share their world in 3D. Using the LiDAR, video and motion data available on smartphones, together with cutting-edge computer vision and AI, Polycam's 3D capture app is bringing an entirely new form of reality capture to the masses. Polycam is used by hundreds of thousands of people to scan spaces and objects for uses cases that range form architecture and interior design to VfX and video game creation. We have received funding from Sequoia Capital, the cofounder of YouTube and other great investors, and are already generating $60k+ monthly recurring revenue.

Engineering team and processes

As a small company, there is essentially only one team, consisting of ~4 engineers (2 fullstack and 2 computer vision), one person running community & marketing, and two cofounders (whose roles consist of engineering, design, team building etc). Our work is largely organized around projects that will deliver ambitious new features for our users, rather than sprints and tickets.

While we do use project management software, have daily standups and a weekly all-hands meeting, we have found that organizing work around longer term projects (e.g. ~1-2 months), is a better way to ensure we're delivering big, rather than merely incremental, improvements. For example, we recently completed a ~2 month project to bring our 3D capture app to all iPhones (rather than just ones with a LiDAR sensor), and the launch of this new feature doubled our revenue and greatly expanded the capabilities of our app (you can read about this launch here https://www.hackster.io/news/polycam-launches-photo-mode-brings-high-accuracy-3d-scanning-to-all-iphones-cb12b94afba2).

Technical Challenges

We've developed a highly optimized and proprietary pipeline for 3D reconstruction that runs directly on mobile devices and ingests depth data from the novel LiDAR sensors (available on iphone 12 pro and 12 pro max), and there is always work to improve this system and make it more reliable and performant.

Since our mobile and web apps are centered around 3D data, there is a lot of innovation that has to take place to build out new tools, push performance and create new experiences. While tooling for photo and video is widespread and commoditized, much of what we need to build for 3D on web and mobile involves working with lower-level libraries and often requires some familiarity with 3D geometry and computer graphics.

  • Develop new professional and creator-focused 3D collaboration tools, to enable 3D creation, messaging, annotation and 3D scene building workflows across mobile and web
