Prepared aims to lead the charge in modernizing the safety systems of the future. By unlocking the full potential of everyday technology, we make emergency communication faster, more accessible, and we introduce information that has never been utilized for emergency response before. Join us in building a safer and more transparent world, together.
At Prepared, you will be building the next generation of software installed in police departments and emergency dispatch centers across the country. You will be working on our mobile app which allows for an effective and efficient internal response to emergencies, combatting issues such as the school shooter epidemic for the more than 150 paying schools currently on Prepared across the country. We expect to be in 500 schools by end of 2021.
Our team puts its people, mission, and values first. People who come to work at Prepared see a better future and want to build that future, together.

Why join us?
Prepared is a seed-stage startup backed by the early investors of Pinterest, SpaceX, Snapchat, Ring, and many others. Its team draws from experience at Yale, UChicago, Intel, and Apple. As we just raised $2.1M, this is a rare opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a rapidly-growing social-impact startup and play a major role in its success.
Prepared already has $150k in ARR and is actively launching its life-saving technology in 150 schools across the country. We are expected to launch in 500 schools next year, covering 5 major cities, with over $1M in ARR. But it's more than just schools for us — we want to recreate how individuals interact with emergency services.
We have overwhelming support from emergency service personnel who are working with us every day to reimagine how emergency services serve their greater community and make our vision into a reality. Our emergency services council includes the former Superintendent of Chicago PD, high ranking members of Los Angeles PD (LAPD), New Haven PD (NHPD), and many more.
Our Co-Founder and CEO, Michael Chime, was named a 2020 Thiel Fellow.
Engineering at Prepared
Our engineering team operates on 1-to-2-week sprints. Each sprint begins with a whole product team meeting to prioritize stories for the sprint and determine time estimates for each feature. The sprint ends with each engineer demonstrating what they've completed to the greater team.
As we are a small engineering team and rapidly expanding, our whole team works together on a range of tasks each sprint — both collectively and individually — to complete them before the deadline. Each task has a lead that is in charge of getting that part done in collaboration with the rest of the team.
We use Pull Requests on GitHub to conduct code reviews. All projects have CI/CD integrated directly into the branches that handle pushing code to staging & production environments — which often happens multiple times a day.
We are connecting up to thousands of devices together on a campus to create a powerful live data collection system during an emergency. This system provides situational awareness to first responders and emergency services to help facilitate their response in the most efficient and effective manner possible.
Connecting all of these devices, processing the information from them, consolidating it in a format for emergency services to understand, and innovating the technology to provide additional key data points and insights is a technical challenge that we are constantly working on.
Mobile Emergency Communication Application (React Native, Kotlin, Swift, React, Electron, Apollo)
You will be working with our mobile development team to improve and build out our mobile applications for both iOS and Android. This application is used by schools across the country to allow for more effective internal response to emergencies — aiming to save lives and increase first responder situational awareness. Information from these mobile solutions is sent to the Emergency Responder Dashboard which is accessed by emergency dispatch and related first responders.
Emergency Responder Dashboard (Electron, React)
You would be working directly with emergency services, dispatch centers, and police to refine and build out the Prepared Emergency Responder Dashboard. This dashboard allows emergency responders to take in and process an unprecedented amount of information during an emergency from Prepared protected buildings and schools. Information currently includes live video, audio, multimedia, and text.
Backend Server (Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, PostgresSQL, Docker):
The entire system is orchestrated by a Ruby on Rails API heavily utilizing the graphql-ruby gem. You would be working on improving and optimizing the API's operations, as well as building new features such as support for live video and chat. This project connects the mobile solutions used by individuals in emergency situations with those that can help them in emergency service dispatch centers — its speed and efficiency will ultimately save lives.
Working at Prepared
As an early-stage startup, we value a scrappy, self-motivated, and entrepreneurial attitude towards work. You are not joining to just finish a task every-day, but rather to shape the direction of the company and what we do on a day-to-day basis. We love it when people go out of their way to make our product better.
The prepared team has identified the thing that we really value. For more on what we believe, check out our values page: https://preparedapp.com/values
Our team is hungry, energetic, and diverse. Currently, across the team, we are 50% minority & 30% female. We heavily encourage debate and constructive criticism as we see those discussions as the best way to improve ourselves and our product offering.
We have company game night every other week. Our favorite event is Jeopardy — we have a legend on our team (dylan) so the game is all-v-Dylan. So far Dylan is in fact in the lead. (beating the rest of the team). Other events include skribbl.io (Pictionary), Among Us, etc.
Before joining the team, you will meet everyone and get to know us as people so you can make a more educated decision before deciding!
We offer a stipend to help with relocation to NYC if coming from out of state. We also offer full-remote positions for senior engineers.
We provide full medical coverage
Currently, we are working remotely until mid-2021. We will have a private office in Manhattan if/when we move back in person. Senior engineers are not required to be in person post-covid.
We offer an unlimited vacation policy.
Work from Home
We offer an unlimited work-from-home policy for engineers.
Social impact driven
We are a social impact company from the ground up and impact on the greater good of the world is at the core of everything we do.
Every quarter (post-covid) we fly all the employees (including remote) out to a determined location so everyone can get to know each other better.
