As a member of our engineering team, you will be directly involved in building tools for students, teachers, and staff. We are looking for developers who can take features from a user story to production, and you will even get the chance to visit local classrooms to test out new prototypes. We work with teachers and researchers across the country to build our tools.
Technologies we use heavily: Ruby on Rails React & React Native Typescript Postgres RethinkDB
Technologies we’d like to use more: GraphQL Tensorflow Elixir & Phoenix
We are looking for candidates who are experienced with the technologies we use heavily and are curious about those we would like to explore. Quill's code base now contains a feature-filled LMS, five separate learning tools, and an incoming React Native app, so experience working on a large codebase and designing code for reuse is a huge plus. As an engineer working on a small team, your experience and input will enable us to serve millions of students in the coming years. We are excited to hear about the tools and frameworks you love that will help us accomplish that task.
Quill.org’s free online tools help low-income 3rd-12th grade students become strong writers and critical thinkers. Teachers are provided with free access to our research-based curriculum, and students receive immediate feedback on their work, enabling them to revise their writing and quickly improve their skills. To immediately assess and serve feedback on student writing, Quill.org’s activities incorporate machine learning and natural language processing, and the nonprofit, open source organization works with academic researchers across the country to design and build its technology and curriculum.
There are 30 million low-income K-12 students in the United States who struggle with basic writing, one of the most important skills people need to improve reading comprehension and advance critical thinking. We are aiming to help at least 10 million low-income students become strong writers and critical thinkers in the next five years, and we have already helped more than 2 million students from 10,000 schools across the United States. To accomplish our mission, Quill is supported by grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, AT&T Foundation, and Google.org, among others.
Quill is an open-source organization, and we work with a large community of developers and educators to launch new literacy tools aligned with our mission. Quill is now working with academic researchers from Stanford and Harvard University to build open source artificial intelligence tools that can help students write thesis statements, use evidence to support claims, and compose essays. Through a nonprofit, community-led effort, we will be able to build revolutionary open source tools that serve the needs of students across the world.
Quill is a team of educators and developers passionate about learning and open source. We're a team that enjoys discussing books and playing board games.
