Our mission is to empower all students to discover & realize their college ambitions. We're a platform that engages students as early as freshmen year and uses micro-scholarships to incentivize students to become better qualified applicants for college & financial aid. We recently launched a platform that allows community college students to transfer to four-year institutions, too. The coolest part of our platform is how it educates students about the possibility of college in the first place.

Why join us?

  • Our people are brilliant, and incredibly passionate about college access and affordability. That commitment to our mission gives our work a shared sense of purpose in the day-to-day. Each person comes from a diverse set of experiences — whether that's from tech, teaching in the classroom, or consulting — but we're all on the same team, striving for the same goals.

  • We are committed to helping students, but have a business plan to do so effectively. Our mission is sustainable; unlike a nonprofit, we have paying clients & are venture-backed (Series B). We are fortunate to work with strong investors like Redpoint, Teamworthy, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Salesforce Ventures, and Owl Ventures.

  • We are launching new products this year and growing our engineering team, and we're looking for people who want to make an impact in the work they're doing. We believe that our best work emerges from a diverse team, and that a diverse team produces better products and outcomes for the communities we serve. We are committed to building a diverse, inclusive & equitable workplace where individuals from a variety of backgrounds are valued and empowered to contribute to our mission.

Engineering at RaiseMe

Engineering team and processes

Our teams is divided into 3 pods, each with a product manager and a designer. We're a nimble team and each pod runs 2-week agile sprints (and all accompanying agile/scrum ceremonies) — the sprints are aligned together for convenience. Each pod (and engineer) is empowered to do what it takes to get things done. We push code via PRs on github and after 2 LGTM it gets merged. We use HoundCI and CircleCI for our CI/CD pipeline and are in the process of switching to containerized development & pipelines. We're a big fan of discussions and like to discuss technical changes via RFCs, group slack or meetings if needed.

Technical Challenges

We have millions of students, thousands of schools, and hundreds of colleges. We have several portals with different use cases — think of high school students, parents, school counselors/teachers, colleges and community college students — so providing a great experience to all is a fascinating technical challenge. We have a ton of data and use machine-learning models to help recommend the right college to students and we have many more ideas on how we can help make a difference in students' education & careers. Another big challenge for us in 2019 is looking at how we can best leverage more of cloud computing (AWS) to help us focus even more on building big things.

Perks & benefits
  • Pet Friendly

We let well-behaved dogs come to the office. We currently have a small number of regular dogs, including our Chief Puppy Officer, Rory, a Cavalier who roams the office most days of the week looking for snacks and cuddles.

  • Free Food

We provide catered lunch every day of the week and most people tend to eat together in our communal lunchroom. We believe it's a great way to learn about about each other—especially people you may not work with on your own team.

  • Maternal/Paternal Leave

Taking care of the little ones is hard. We offer fully-paid parental benefits to our employees: 12 weeks for the primary caregiver, and 6 weeks for the non-primary.

  • Philanthropic Contributions

As a mission-driven company, we try to find opportunities to volunteer with local organizations to serve students & give back to our community. We often host students in our office, too.

  • Transportation

We offer automated, pre-tax deductions on team members' Clipper Cards to save costs no matter the commute, and to encourage greater use of public transportation in our communities.

  • Health Insurance

We offer comprehensive medical, dental, and vision to all of our full-time employees. We partner with Fitness SF to offer discounted gym memberships, and we have showers back at the office for those who commute by bike or foot!

  • Workshops/Conferences

We encourage our team to pursue learning opportunities, and team members can put budget toward conferences, books, and/or classes to further growth & development.

  • Team Activities

We have an annual company offsite, monthly outings, and sometimes office karaoke! Most Fridays there's a D&D match, while others prefer to go up to our rooftop to take in the beautiful San Francisco skyline and enjoy a beverage of their choice.

  • Generous Vacation

We have an un-tracked vacation policy and fully believe in people taking the right amount of time off so that they are refreshed and engaged when at work.

  • Flexible Hours

Our team members know their goals and are driven to achieve them; thus, we trust people to work on a schedule that aligns with the responsibilities they have in the day-to-day. We're not a traditional 9 - 5; some team members get started early and some like to work late. As long as our team members organize their schedules around key meetings and project deadlines, we don't mind if you need to leave early to pick up the kids from work or step out for a doctor's appointment.

  • Beautiful Office

We recently moved into a new office in SoMa with an open floor plan to collaborate, and lots of nooks & crannies for hiding out to code. On nice days, you might be taking a meeting on our roof deck. We are close to public transportation (nearest BART/MUNI station is Civic Center).

  • 401(k) Contribution

While we don't yet offer matching, our 401(k) is offered through Guideline and seamlessly integrates with our payroll provider.
