Role Description
Lead a team of engineers, both technically and as a people manager, to deliver value to community health organizations across the country.
Relevant's mission is to support healthcare non-profits like community health centers and health homes in their drive to improve patient health. We do this by providing smart, friendly analytics software, along with hands-on support and consulting to help health centers tackle all kinds of data challenges.
We've come a long way primarily hiring junior engineers, but we're ready to add a lead engineer to help focus our efforts and scale the team through a combination of people management skill, technical experience, and software architecture design. If you have a track record of these skills, are excited about our mission of improving health outcomes for underserved patients, and are passionate about building great software, we'd love to talk to you.
Responsibilities
Engineering management: it's very important to us that working at Relevant be a great long-term career decision for our engineers. As manager of a team of engineers, work to ensure their personal development goals are aligned with the needs of the company, and that each engineer is empowered to accomplish their goals.
Software development process: engineering is a delicate balance, full of ambiguity. Is this change a hacky fix or an overengineered mess? Was that code review comment bikeshedding or too lenient? Apply your experience to navigate these extremes, modeling exemplary behavior for the team, and keeping us focused on delivering value to our users.
Technical design: scaling our engineering team effectively means designing and implementing the right systems for us to leverage each engineer's abilities. Contribute to our architecture by identifying opportunities for large scale improvements, provide the insights we need to design them, and drive development on them.
Preferred qualifications
4+ years technical experience: we're proud of the team we've built of mostly junior engineers, but this role is centered around coaching and mentorship. We’re looking for someone who has professional experience working on at least one large code base, over the course of several years, with more than half a dozen collaborators.
Strong leadership skills: in this role, you'll be asking engineers to entrust you with their careers, so you'll need the skills to give them a good reason to say yes. Know how to inspire trust in your reports, create a safe space for them to grow professionally, articulate their needs to management, and frequently share candid feedback with them.
Web development expertise: our stack is React, Rails, and Postgres. If you're familiar with them already, that's a plus. But we’re looking for mastery of some web development stack, whether it's an Angular frontend powered by Express.js and MongoDB, an Ember frontend powered by Spring and MySQL, or something else.
A desire to make healthcare better, with a focus on equity and social justice. We’re not the kind of startup chasing hyper-growth. We’re building tools used by safety-net organizations that are fighting health disparities, and are looking for candidates who find this focus compelling.
Thrive in collaboration: we're a tight-knit team of people who care deeply about our users and each other. We're looking for a teammate who will thrive in this collaborative environment and contribute to our continued, collective growth.
