Engineering at RepairSmith

Engineering team and processes

Currently, our team consists of four sub-teams, one mainly focused on the Consumer-facing web application and others on internal tools and our core backend platform. We follow lean Kanban as our software development process, so our focus is on incremental development with the goal of completing user stories as quickly as possible then moving on to the next item in a continuous flow.

We practice Continuous Delivery, so as soon as a story or group of stories is completed, we deploy them to production. Successful continuous delivery is predicated on good automation, so we practice test-driven development for our core backend platform and currently maintain 80+ percent code-coverage. We currently utilize GitLab and use Merge Requests for code reviews, and leverage GitLab’s CI/CD capability to automate pipelines that deploy our applications as Docker images to our Kubernetes infrastructure hosted in AWS.

Technical Challenges

We have Java microservices based on Spring Boot for our core backend and ReactJS applications for our front-end. Given the distributed nature of the architecture, we are continuously challenged by implementing solutions that address distributed system concerns, such as transaction handling, security, caching, scalability, etc. The microservices architecture presents a certain level of complexity that needs to be addressed but coming up with the proper solutions are immensely rewarding from a technical point of view.

Projects you might work on
  • Automation of parts acquisition, inventory management, and tracking. The better we can be at the logistics of repair parts, the more efficient our operations staff can be.

  • Audit logging using Debezium. Given our business is heavily reliant on operational efficiency and logistics, being able to track changes to state and workflow is paramount. We are leveraging Debezium to provide fine-grained audit logging to record changes system-wide.

  • Pricing automation. Being able to automatically provide repair quotes without the assistance of a human Service Advisor will allow our business to scale rapidly without the need for hiring additional operations staff. Car repair pricing is complex given the nature of repairs, the parts required, the variations in labor duration, and the variety of vehicles, so we employ sophisticated algorithms to automate our pricing.

  • Blue-green deployments with automated rollback. We already practice Continuous Delivery by performing rolling deployments to our Kubernetes cluster in production every single day, but the next level would be to implement blue-green style deployments with automated rollback by hooking into our DataDog metrics.
