Engineering at RepairSmith
Engineering team and processes

Currently, our team consists of two sub-teams, one focused on the Consumer-facing web application and another on internal tools and core backend platform, but we are planning to scale out into more teams as the business grows. We follow lean Kanban as our software development process, so our focus is on incremental development with the goal of completing user stories as quickly as possible then moving on to the next item in a continuous flow.

We practice Continuous Delivery, so as soon as a story or group of stories is completed, we deploy them to production. Successful continuous delivery is predicated on good automation, so we practice test-driven development for our core backend platform and currently maintain 80+ percent code-coverage. We currently utilize GitLab and use Merge Requests for code reviews, and leverage GitLab’s CI/CD capability to automate pipelines that deploy our applications as Docker images to our Rancher infrastructure hosted in AWS.

Technical Challenges

We have Java microservices based on Spring Boot for our core backend and ReactJS applications for our front-end. Given the distributed nature of the architecture, we are continuously challenged by implementing solutions that address distributed system concerns, such as transaction handling, security, caching, scalability, etc. The microservices architecture presents a certain level of complexity that needs to be addressed but coming up with the proper solutions are immensely rewarding from a technical point of view.

Projects you might work on
  • Internal operations application that implements a custom workflow engine based on a state machine. The application significantly increases the efficiency of our operations staff that manage the various states of the repair requests and appointments of our customers.

  • Platform-wide search is provided by AWS Elasticsearch Service, with the first phase of the implementation providing a full-text search for common car repairs. We plan on expanding search capability to include indexing of year/make/model/trim vehicle information as well as repair symptoms for the purposes of car repair diagnostics.

  • Introduction of delivery-based car repair product on our Consumer web app that allows our customers to book a repair appointment in which our state-of-the-art mobile repair truck arrives at the customer’s location to perform an onsite repair, eliminating the need for the customer to drop off the vehicle at a repair shop.

  • Migrate from Rancher container orchestration to Kubernetes, specifically AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service, with plans to utilize Spinnaker for Continuous Delivery using blue/green and canary deployment strategies.
