About the team: The Activation & Foundations area encompasses two major themes in delivering value to our customers:

We activate customers to take the next step on their financial journey, whether it’s getting started with investing, gaining the confidence to grow their portfolio or build a savings habit, or go deeper with a premium experience.

We build the foundations to deliver a cohesive experience across Robinhood, whether that’s centralizing customer identity, delivering a seamless experience for communications across the app, or ensuring UI consistency with our design system. These two themes, Activation & Foundations, share a common perspective: they sit above our financial services and work together to ensure a cohesive experience across Robinhood.

We are looking for an area-level Principal Software Engineer to help us solve a wide variety of technical problems:

How do we share the right information with a customer that meets them where they are on their unique financial journey? How do we make our products and UI responsive to changes in the financial markets and the needs of our customers? How do we scale our services to 10x the capacity they serve today? How do we manage key third-party dependencies that are resilient to big spikes of traffic?

What you’ll do day-to-day: You’ll create and implement the technical strategy and roadmap for the entire Activation & Foundations area. Be defining and advancing best practices in collaboration with domain-specific Senior and Staff Engineers. You’ll own and improve the operational excellence, efficiency, and sustainability of all Activation & Foundations services. Mentor Senior and Staff Engineers and up-level the Activation & Foundations engineering organization. Be a hands-on developer for critical projects in the roadmap. Influence organizational goals and strategy as the representative of the technical teams within Activation & Foundations. You’ll be helping grow Robinhood’s Technical Lead community through interviews and close partnership with our Recruiting team.

About you: 10+ years of software engineering experience. 3+ years technically leading large engineering organizations with multiple teams. You have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent training, fellowship, or work experience. You have helped establish a community of Senior and Staff Engineers that is able to set strategy and help one another grow. You have experience with distributed systems and know how to make them reliable and correct at scale. You are comfortable with either mobile or web concepts and have experience building products across the technical stack. You enjoy collaborating with a variety of functions, including Engineering, Data, Product Management, Design, and Management. You are an excellent communicator and are comfortable explaining complex technical concepts to senior managers and other engineers.
