Rocketship.vc
We love data. We even wrote the book on loving data. And we run our business, just the way you do yours — with data. We have data on over ten million companies all over the world. We use smart algorithms to identify and invest in global winners.
After investing, we continue to track your data, compare it with your competition and the market and feed our insights back to you. Many of our companies are outside silicon valley, we act as their bridge to the valley. You can also benefit from experience of our partners — from sharing an office at Stanford with Sergey Brin, working for Jeff Bezos, to investing in Mark Zuckerberg in 2005. Seriously though, we have created and scaled startups worth $1B at exit, and were instrumental in creating Amazon.com's marketplace, mechanical turk, and @walmartlabs.
Why join us?
If you want to be an entrepreneur, Rocketship.vc is the best place to be. You can see amazing ideas and opportunities that some of the best founders are building companies around globally. You can learn from what works and what doesn't qualitatively as well as quantitatively and perhaps identify your own opportunity. The full circle of course will be when Rocketship.vc will chasing you to fund you!
If you rather want to be an investor, Rocketship.vc offers the fastest path to becoming an investment partner since all of us are engineers and we believe that the people who build the algorithms should also be the ones who should make investments to make sure that the feedback loop is as tight as possible.
You will get a chance to work with world class data scientists and engineers who are winners of multiple test of time awards as well as authoring the leading textbook on data mining.
Engineering at Rocketship.vc
It's a flat structure with all team members reporting to one partner. The purpose of the engineering team is to build and manage both the data infrastructure as well as the machine learning pipeline that generates investment candidates. All code resides in github. All data resides in a combination of databases, amazon S3 and file systems on AWS. All compute happens on AWS.
Given that the team is small, at any time there are only 2-3 projects where one person is the prime mover for the project. Both the entire company as well as the engg team meet once a week to discuss ongoing issues, challenges, projects and priorities.
The team is in near constant communication via Slack.
- Managing the data flow to reliably import several tens of data sources which deliver up to a TB of data a month.
- Advancing unification and deduplication techniques to create a coherent data set for the machine-learning algorithms to work on.
- Building algorithms and machine-learning models that help the fund better evaluate promising startups for possible investment.
- Developing computation that helps the fund illuminate markets around the world, quantify venture investment models, and determine the impact and value of various data sources.
