Engineering at Scratch
Technical Challenges

Scratch aims to bring the source of truth for trillions of dollars, which means we must take high-quality engineering seriously. It’s crucial we have accuracy and precision on non-trivial math down to seven decimal places with no data loss or security compromises.

Thus, we’re taking a novel approach with provable guarantees around data integrity, security, predictive analytics and machine learning, all with extreme durability requirements. To solve our accounting problem, for example, we’ve built our own computation model and distributed database from the ground up. If you’re an engineer that likes high-stakes, first principles engineering challenges, you’ll love Scratch.

Projects you might work on
  • A project you could work on is to scale Abacus - our time-series database system that allows users to maintain and manipulate multiple histories of any particular “key-value”. Abacus is the foundation of our unique approach to loan accounting system, which will let us service loans for a fraction of the cost compared to our competitors. It has strict requirements include strict consistency and correctness, isolation and full audibility. The most immediate milestone is to make Abacus a fully concurrent transactional system, and maintaining the correctness of our automatic resolvers for conflicting writers.

  • You can work on bringing data visualizations and new tools to our web applications that help borrowers understand and take control over their debt. This includes tools that helps borrowers understand how a loan works, how much interest their paying, and gives them the flexibility to make payments around their schedule.

    We'll also soon be building out React Native mobile apps to bring these tools closer to the user.
