1 in 3 patients skips taking their medications because they’re too expensive. We’re on a mission to fix that. Patients who take their meds regularly cost the health system significantly less. Like a “good driver discount”, Sempre shares these savings with patients by allowing them to pay less when they do the right things for their health. Patients receive texts like,
If you pick up your prescription on time, you'll pay just $15. If you wait until next week, you'll pay $30. This means patients can bring their own costs down over time. Sempre enables long-term behavior change and saves healthcare dollars, while addressing affordability in a unique way.
We parse millions of prescription records to predict the right price, for the right patient, at the right time. Then our data integrations deliver that price at any pharmacy in the US. Via SMS, patients have access to their discounts, why they got those discounts and guidance on how to improve their health.
Work on something that matters - the product we’re building helps patients afford medications they need.
In 2018, Sempre announced our $8M series A (https://prn.to/2S5ml2q), major partnerships with pharma manufacturers & PBMs (https://prn.to/2RiUc3k), and 12-month outcomes & expanding partnership with UPMC, the second largest integrated health system in the US (https://prn.to/2FLBhwE).
Ownership - as our eleventh teammate and fourth engineer you’ll have both autonomy and responsibility. You will decide and own the most important projects. You’ll design new products and features from scratch, get team buy-in, implement, and deploy. You’ll play a crucial role in deciding which technologies we choose. We won’t add significant process, checks, and balances to your flow - we trust each other to produce high quality work.
Team - the founders are both Berkeley grads with a combination of healthcare and engineering experience. The CEO has worked in healthcare for 8 years - most recently she was founding data scientist at Propeller Health. The CTO was most recently engineering director at MindMeld, an NLP company acquired by Cisco last year.
Also, our team is half women, and that happened organically without explicit diversity initiatives.
Broaden your skillset beyond engineering - want to interact with patients? Take over patient support hours for a few days. Interested in government policy? We’re working directly with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid.
Our engineering team is four people today: myself (CTO) & three full-stack engineers. We use the Kanban workflow in Jira, have a daily engineering sync to discuss the days projects, and have a weekly product planning meeting with whole company to agree on prioritization.
- Github pull requests for all code reviews
- Backend services deployed to Aptible's Enclave docker container orchestration platform (think Heroku for healthcare)
- CircleCi to run unit tests and deploy code via git push
- Microservice architecture deployed on Aptible's container PaaS (https://www.aptible.com/enclave/)
- Backend services written in python include API's and event processors communicating via queues (RabbitMQ)
- Single-page, web applications written in React/Redux
Interesting technical challenges include
- Building products that provide a personalized experience to each of our thousands of patients
- Optimizing budgets to maximize adherence and forecasting
- Scaling our services and operations
- Security for HIPAA-compliance: we are currently obtaining HITRUST certification (https://datica.com/academy/what-is-hitrust/)
Alex: our homegrown CMS we use to decide what we communicate to patients, how to handle inbound communication, and trigger events.
Pricing and pharmacy integrations: iterate on our incentive-based pricing algorithm to calculate the optimal price for each patient and integrate with the US pharmacy switch to deliver that price to any pharmacy in the country.
Jingle: we're building an API layer on top of pharmacies who don't have one. Let me know if you'd like to learn more.
Admin tool: our web app for patient management allows us to track program progress and prioritize interventions for the most at-risk patients.
We value teammates who take ownership over their work: excellence is everyone's responsibility. We assume everything is possible by default. We are relentlessly curious about our trade and industry. We celebrate every small victory together.
