Why join us?
We're a tight-knit team of international, remote thinkers. Nobody is going to be looking over your shoulder watching what you do every day. We care about building flexible, yet well-thought-out systems that don't burden our team members. We value transparency in communication, candid conversations, and the long-term happiness of everyone.
At heart, we're bootstrappers. In the past year, we've grown our annual recurring revenue from $1.4m to nearly $4m without taking any outside funding. With 100s of thousands of users across our products, we've mastered growth-hacking and performance marketing.
Our founder built all of the products himself before starting to hire and build out a team. That means engineering is core to our DNA. We follow best practices, consider intelligent engineering design, and proudly brandish the reliability of our code-base.
We're a survey-driven company. We survey our users constantly and try to make nearly all decisions based on analytics and data. This means we really listen to our users which leads to lots of heart-warming feedback from people whose lives we're improving.
Social media is for many businesses a major driver of sales. In this time, especially with the Covid-19 crisis, many small businesses are hurting. Our tools enable these businesses to increase their sales and run their social media accounts more effectively.
We're a young company. That means you have the potential to influence our processes and code-base. We encourage our team members to regularly contribute ideas. We recognize that we might not be doing everything in the most efficient way possible. That's why we emphasize idea contribution and transparent feedback. The most important kind of feedback that exists at our company is constructive criticism from you. We see you as not an employee, but a partner. We care deeply about your ideas.
Engineering at Shakd, LLC
We don't operate on regular development cycles. We use JIRA + Kanban for project management. We do daily standups on Slack and have weekly engineering calls. We ship as needed. As we formalize our development process more and more, we're looking to transition to regular releases, but at this moment we don't believe that's necessary. Team members jump from one app to another frequently. Currently, we're maintaining and updating 3 iOS apps. We're working to build out reusable components and frameworks across all of our properties. The goal is to establish consistent design and core functionality across the apps. Depending on your skill set, you might be working on implementing new designs, building out entirely new features, or investigating tricky bugs.
We're extracting every single piece of reusable functionality from the apps and turning them into robust, documented, and tested frameworks (Cocoapods) that can be shared. This enables us to move much faster and roll out new features to multiple apps at once. We envision a future where we have a suite of apps that help people with social media, almost like an Adobe Creative Suite for social tools.
The need for reusability, both in our iOS apps and backends, is essential.
You'd get to work on implementing a custom-backend into our app Hashtag Expert. Currently, Hashtag Expert is built on top of iCloud. Transitioning our hundreds of thousands of users from iCloud to a custom backend will be a monster challenge—one that would test any experienced engineer.
You'd get to work on improving our CI/CD flow. We currently use Bitrise + Fastlane to automate deployment of builds. These kinds of technical automations are super important to us. We're all ears if you have ideas for improving our technical process.
Working at Shakd, LLC
We're laid back, international, and totally remote. Our team members are from all over the world and we're proud to say that. That enables a diverse set of backgrounds and ideas. We have a weekly all-hands meeting where we get to know each other better and talk about what's our priorities are.
At the end of the day, we recognize that typical 9 to 5 working hours are an outdated concept. We're not machines and we're not meant to work for hours and hours every single day. All we ask is that you are productive. We encourage you to work your own hours and build your own schedule. Feel free to take a day off during the week and make up for it on Sunday.
We try to keep meetings to a minimum because we know they can become a burden. Many team members work in completely different timezones. This might sound difficult with such a small team of just around 10 people. However, that fact has encouraged us to adopt asynchronous processes so that you can work both whenever and wherever and have everything you need to get your work done.
Work-life balance is ingrained in our values. We're still figuring out what makes the most sense to offer in terms of benefits and perks. Because so much of our team is international, some traditional perks are not as useful (i.e. Health Insurance for European team members). However, we pay very competitive rates and are deeply invested in making sure our team members are happy.
