Shipt
Through a user-friendly app and a local network of reliable shoppers, Shipt connects members to fresh groceries and everyday essentials. Saving time, fuel and headspace, next-hour, same day grocery delivery is quickly becoming an everyday necessity for people looking for an extra few hours and intentional food choices.
Why join us?
Shipt’s purpose and culture are amazing. We exist to serve people by making sure that they have fresh groceries even when they do not have the time to go grocery shopping. Additionally, we provide people with a way to have a job that affords them a flexible working schedule doing something that they enjoy doing. Customer service is at the heart of everything we do. Knowing that others are counting on us for this important service, drives everyone in the company.
Shipt was acquired in 2017 by Target because of the strength of the idea and the business it had developed. Since being acquired by Target, Shipt has grown both as a business and as a team. We have over 100 engineers working in both San Francisco, CA and Birmingham, AL. We provide our services nationwide and have partnerships with many large grocery retailers. We have nearly 100,000 shoppers in our network.
We have grown from 350 employees to 700 in the last 2 years and forecasting more growth into 2020.
Engineering at Shipt
Our Engineering teams are small, agile teams that execute against a product roadmap. Teams are made of engineers, product managers, designers and data scientists. Teams are highly collaborative and work in a test-driven way. Teams are empowered to deliver in the best way they see fit with limited process getting in the way. With this freedom comes the accountability to business metrics and responsibility to support their systems if there are any issues at any time. Some teams work in sprints, some work with more of a Kanban flow and the way software is developed is a constantly changing process as each team refines their processes to deliver value to customers as fast as possible.
There are many challenging problems that different teams deal with. We have good and improving support from internal tools to support test and deploy pipelines - leaving the teams to focus on their domain-specific problems. These problems range from matching members to shoppers to Natural Language Processing (NLP) and query understanding in product search to high-performance external APIs for partner integrations. Backend teams are expected to deliver fast, high-quality, highly-available, fault-tolerant, multi-region active/active microservices.
Mobile apps and web-based grocery shopping experiences. We are based on a React (web) and ReactNative (apps) stacks. Additionally, we have a mobile app that our shoppers use to claim orders and assist them in shopping the orders.
Shopper Offering. Our offering system is how our shoppers are told about shops that are available from our members. The algorithm underneath this service is complex and ever-changing. Factors include shopper fairness, new shopper success, order complexity, member/shopper pairing, and shopper ratings.
Micro Frontend Internal Architecture. We are rebuilding our internal tool framework in React to support the needs of many teams. This project has a lengthy roadmap which includes a goal of open sourcing the platform. It has a heavy focus on modular components and on the developer experience.
We recently migrated our platform to Kubernetes deployments. We continue to strive to keep our platform modern with best-of-breed tools that support speed of deployment and operational excellence. This kind of work will continue on an ongoing basis.
We get product data from a variety of retailers using a variety of methods. We need to design and build systems ensure that all product data is processed and available to shoppers and members in a timely manner to support changes in pricing and availability.
We’re looking for ways to help our shoppers shop for items more conveniently by optimizing the order in which they look for items in the store based on item location.
Working at Shipt
Our Shipt culture can be described with our core values.
People first: Shipt puts people first in everything we do, so we make the perks and programs that we offer to our team members a priority. We’re fanatical about providing personal, high-touch service that goes above and beyond. And in order to provide that high level of service, it's imperative that the team members at Shipt are well taken care of. Shipt makes sure our employees are happy, healthy, and productive by providing unlimited PTO and great benefits including health insurance, counseling, legal advice, and financial consulting. New parents need not worry, because Shipt provides progressive paid parental leave. Lastly, Shipt focuses on our employees' health and wellness; we have an on-site gym in Birmingham, a $50/month wellness stipend in San Francisco, and free weekly yoga. In every action Shipt takes, we strive to ensure our team members feel the impact of our People First mentality.
Put Excellence on Repeat: Every day, Shipt team members strive for excellence. From our product, to our service, to our relationships, we consistently set high goals for ourselves. To encourage excellence each day, Shipt supports career growth and development by promoting from within. Shipt School is a program designed to refine existing and develop new skills. We provide courses including writing workshops, coding classes, and even self-defense classes. Shipt hosts technology conferences, like our React Conference, in which not only Shipt team members, but members of the community, are invited to join. Furthermore, our monthly Mentorshipt Program allows team members the opportunity to shadow and learn from senior employees; this program helps our team members enhance skills and form relationships within the company. We strive for excellence in all that we do, and we work hard to help our Shipt team members achieve it.
Move Fast, Celebrate Wins
We often say that Shipt years are a lot like dog years. We move so quickly that in one year you can see seven years' worth of growth. Moving quickly is how Shipt has earned success to date, and it’s how to ensure success in the future. This translates into a strong kudos culture.
Not only do we reward team members with prizes, such as gift cards for successes, but we have a Slack channel specific to providing public kudos so the whole company is aware. Similarly, we throw parties when new product features launch, complete with cake, balloons, and speeches. But the party doesn't stop there! The Shipt Town Hall is an annual all-hands meeting where we come together to hear from our executive team about the wins of the previous year and evaluate growth opportunities for the upcoming year. We move fast, and celebrate wins, together.
Built on Trust We believe that empowerment leads to success. Our work depends on taking people at their word. Team members are given the freedom and responsibility to make decisions that have a meaningful impact on our business. We cultivate confidence in our team through small actions that make a big impact, like Innovation Labs, which are opportunities for any Shipt team member to sit down with our Product Team to brainstorm the next big idea they've been dreaming up for Shipt's service. Similarly, we love Bug Bashing - and no, we aren't talking about the creepy crawly types. We're talking about competitions between our engineers to see who can sift through the most code looking for errors; and yes, prizes are involved. We know we’ll be successful, because we trust one another.
Build Community The community Shipt is creating isn’t an accident – it’s purposeful, meaningful, and fundamental to our success. Hunger Action Month is very important to Shipt; annually we host an in-office competition to see which team can collect the most food to donate to our local food banks. This year a little healthy competition yielded over 1,000 pounds of food which is approximately 1,150 meals! Shipt has collected and donated school uniforms and supplies for local students to prepare for success in the upcoming school year. Additionally, members of Shipt's technology team visit local schools to mentor students interested in coding. Our dedication to supporting and building community extends throughout the country. When the devastation from Hurricane Harvey affected the state of Texas, Shipt filled one large U-Haul truck with groceries and drove it to those affected.
