Why join us?
We're the only venture-funded company in a stodgy space, with our youngest competitor having a 20-year old platform.
Craft alcohol is exploding in popularity with the number of breweries rising more than 9% per year. New categories like hard kombucha, seltzers, and THC drinks are further driving a huge rise in the number of smaller suppliers needing operational support.
Our founders have worked at Google (CTO) and McKinsey (CEO), both with extensive experience with smaller startups.
Brewery owners are an amazing combination of chef, entrepreneur, and factory engineer. We get to work with them every day to help them bring their dreams to life.
Engineering at SimpleCircle
We're a small team so we have small processes that will grow as we grow. We have CI/CD for every commit backed by Bazel for reproducible tests. Our dev environment is fast and reliable. For local development, we use fake services to make sure spinning up the frontend is fast and easy. Production deploys take 10 seconds.
We're experienced managing more formal engineering processes, and will selectively pull from them to help the team scale as needed.
Modeling core business workflows is a rich source of technical challenges. As a teaser, consider modeling a brewery that makes a new beer. The beer might be sold in different packages (kegs, cans) with different package costs. The brewery might experiment with different recipes that are sold as the same product. Different recipes might change the alcohol-by-volume content, triggering different tax implications. We deal with real-world processes and products, so anything that can happen needs to be modeled for.
Another interesting challenge is delivery route setting and optimization. Breweries often create new routes practically daily and have to solve for a rich set of constraints about who will handle what delivery including drive time/driver overtime pay, customer delivery windows, vehicle weight restriction, traffic, etc.
Additionally, we have to integrate with a broad array of partner systems, including accounting, POS systems such as Square, and vehicle tracking like Samsara.
Develop APIs in Go using gRPC to power the operations that go into making beer. APIs must reflect real-world operations and require a deep knowledge of the brewery processes. You'll gain experience and knowledge via site visits, customer calls, and internal discussions.
Implement an end-to-end sales order in our React app, using a state machine to model the process and ensuring that the total history of the order is captured for auditability.
Use a library or external partner to create a way to automatically ingest vendor invoices from into the system, in order to track beer production costs. In the medium or long term, we'll investigate using automatic data entry with machine vision.
Working at SimpleCircle
We care a lot about building a culture where we can come together to do great work together. Our core values are Respect (for each other and our customers), Ownership (for our work and the company), Development (in our skills, and collective knowledge), and Efficiency (as individuals, and as a company).
As a nascent company, ensuring that we build a diverse workforce is something we're trying to entrench early, especially given the efforts the beer industry as a whole is making to improve its own diversity. At this stage, our efforts are primarily in trying to source from a variety of backgrounds and channels, and run a consistent and objective hiring process that reduces bias.
