SkillMagic was founded by Jason Lew (, a repeat entrepreneur who has helped grow teams at Apple (iPhone engineer), MightySignal (Co-Founder & CTO/COO, acquired by Instacart while profitable), and Instacart (Director of Engineering, Growth Acquisition). The most rewarding part of his career has always been helping others reach their full potential through training and learning, which is why he started SkillMagic.

Currently, knowledge critical for helping people learn and grow at work is siloed in outdated Google docs, back-and-forth emails, and in people's brains. SkillMagic is unifying this knowledge into a single source and makes it accessible through fast deployment, AI-driven recommendations, and a technical-first learner experience. Specifically, we are focused on helping engineers grow their technical skills, even while working remotely.

Engineering at SkillMagic

Engineering team and processes

As an early hire, the feedback loop between customers, product, and engineering will be TIGHT. You'll talk directly to our customers on regularly scheduled calls, which will give you the opportunity to deeply understand their problems. You'll be coached on customer development skills, such as what types of questions to ask and how to dig deeper when you find a customer pain point.

Once you understand their problems, you'll have a direct say in the product roadmap. Roadmap items will always be metrics driven, and we'll value both immediate impact projects as well as longer-term infrastructure projects which will set us up for future success.

We'll be using a light sprint process and will add more processes as needed as we grow the team. You'll have a direct say in this.

Unique to SkillMagic, our CEO will be coding alongside you to build out the product, so you don't need to worry about the business guy who doesn't understand what it's like to be an engineer!

Technical Challenges

On the frontend, we need to build a highly engaging experience for people to learn. This is not a simple task and will require deep understanding of the customer as well as excellent design skills.

On the backend/infra side, we're going to be gathering LARGE amounts of learning data as the company grows, so we need to build a system which is scalable but also nimble enough that we can run quick experiments.
