Engineering team and processes

About a year and a half ago, we moved from 3 big functional teams to a structure composed of more focused cross functional product teams. Each team is between 4 to 7-8 engineers - each team members report directly to their team lead but get also support from an engineering manager overseeing a handful of teams. We work closely with Product managers and Product designers to build the features of the website builder. We are agile but each team define the processes that make sense for them along some common guidelines and best practices.

Technical Challenges

Maintaining a product in an adapting ecosystem with an ever-growing customer base.
We have a large code base with a long lifetime.
Our team is currently growing quickly and it's a definite challenge to make sure that everyone stays on the same page and that new processes are implemented correctly.
Making sure Squarespace works on all the different browsers and mobile.
One of Squarespace's values is simplify. It's a constant challenge to make sure that the engineering org is always working to simplify everything we do.

Projects you might work on

We recently launched the platform in Spanish, French and German, it was a multi year project involving a lot of product engineering and infrastructure teams. We defined standards for wrapping text in our code base to then extract them for translation and reintegrate the translated strings in our bundle at build time. Another project we are currently working on is our rich text editor library that we are integrating in our different products on the web and on mobile.

Working at Squarespace

While Squarespace is widely recognized as a leader in the design space, many tend to overlook the incredibly strong engineering culture that supports our sophisticated platform. One of our core values is “design is not a luxury”, and this applies not only to the beautiful templates and layouts Squarespace users interact with every day, but also to the design of the software we build. We also encourage peer mentorships through various channels like forums where frontend and/or backend engineers gather to discuss standards we want to adopt or present to the group results of their research. A couple of times a year we organize hackweeks during which engineers and designers work on projects they define themselves and present back to the group at the end of the week.
