  • We founded Standard Bots because we believe that automation can lead to a better world. By performing time-consuming repetitive and dangerous tasks, robotics gives us more time to be creative, spend time with loved ones, and chase our dreams.

    Though the potential of this technology is immense, when we looked around we saw a broken robotics market — one with enormous upfront costs, excessively complex software, and outdated support systems that made it impossible for small business and startups to take advantage of automation’s many benefits.

    So we assembled a team of experts to build a new robot, write custom software for it, and develop a new kind of subscription model that opens the world of automation to everyone.

  • We’re a team of engineers, artists, educators, and roboticists who love finding simple solutions to hard technical challenges. We’re working at the forefront of what’s possible, with others who are equally passionate about making their mark on the world.

    Before joining Standard Bots, members of our team have accomplished the following: built three robotic arms for NASA, started a $2b+ vertical farming company, earned 4th Place in DARPA Robotics Challenge, wrote one of the most-used open-source robotics packages, taught thousands of people to build electric car powertrains and battery management systems, etc.

  • Automation will define our future, so it must be widely available and applied toward a noble mission. We’ve taken the first step, and we’re just getting started.

Engineering at Standard Bots

Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team operates on one week cycles. Each cycle begins with a weekly meeting to discuss time estimates for features, and ends with a demo at the All Hands meeting, where engineers are encouraged to show off the work they've completed. Every engineer own a part of the software stack and is responsible for maintaining their projects. With that being said, we encourage collaboration and pair-programming to maintain a high-empathy culture. In that, we follow an RFC process when making architectural changes and encourage all engineers to weigh-in. We use Pull Requests on Gihub to conduct code reviews.

Technical Challenges

We're building in-house algorithms to allow our robots to detect and avoid obstacles, scan objects, estimate their poses, and automatically understand how to grasp objects.

Projects you might work on
  • You would get to work on expanding our routine step library and allowing customers to program the robot to perform tasks such as: scanning, detecting, and moving objects in space using our robot's built-in depth camera.

  • You would get to work on making our robots smarter by monitoring current and voltage health.

  • You would get to add safety features to allow robots to detect humans in their vicinity and automatically adjust their speeds.

We see engineers as creative problem-solvers, and as such we involve engineering in the process early — hearing about the customer pain points, ideating on potential approaches we can take, prototyping ideas that seem promising, and doing the solid engineering work to make customers’ lives easier (and our future selves happier). Our engineering team culture is collaborative; we help each other out, and pair frequently to share knowledge and accelerate our learning.
