Engineering team and processes

Our team is small and tight knit. The team is currently split across 3 major functional areas - consumer and ops, infrastructure, and ML / CV. We plan our engineering goals quarterly with feedback / input from every functional area (retail, ops, sales, hardware, design, finance) and then meet weekly to track our progress against these goals. We use Asana for project management and use github pull requests to deploy our code to production.

For each functional area we also hold a cross-functional meeting weekly to triage new requests and have a forum for shared requirements speccing.

Technical Challenges

Consumer - our app controls a real-world physical device. We're working on making the onboarding process as smooth and enticing as possible - with a better UI, better technology integration between the IoT store and the customer's phone, and with a more conversational ui coming from the IoT store itself. We've just launched apple pay, launched our first Hotel keycard integration, and will be launching new promotional and targeting frameworks in the coming quarters.

Experimentation - we have an unprecedented touchpoint with customers via our app and our stores, but optimizing things like pricing, discounts, item selection, etc. is something we're just starting to take on. Our advisors include the Chief Economist at Google and the former Head of Analytics at Instagram.

Deep learning - we run every transaction through a set of deep learning models to determine what folks are removing from our stores. This system involves spinning up (expensive) GPU instances in the cloud and ensuring we scale horizontally to efficiently handle all transactions.

Logistics - we've constrained our logistics problem, but as we spin up more ML backend services to help us plan for inventory ordering and demand forecasting, we need to understand how to better measure performance and efficacy of our different modeling and operational approaches.

Projects you might work on
  • Help us Stock Well - Build a voting and rating experience into our consumer app that allows customers to request new items, surfaces those item requests to peers (folks who also shop at that same store) to validate need, and then automatically restocks those items into the stores given feedback from our retail team.

  • Ordering Tool - Automate the ordering process that allows us to maintain low levels of inventory in our warehouse. This should take into account our demand forecasting backend and should also manage communication, purchase order requisitioning, and inbounding as goods are delivered to our warehouse from suppliers.

  • Conversational Store - Run a quantized Neural Network on a low compute environment (i.e. our stores) to determine when folks are around the stores, and module and shine the lights so that our stores come alive as folks interact with them.

We've done the naive thing of doing everything ourselves — we're fully vertically integrated. This means that our company culture is by nature extremely collaborative and cross functional. It's not uncommon for engineers to take on more product ownership and work with business partners across Retail (what we fill the stores with), Ops (how we get the goods there), Sales (how we place the stores), Marketing (how we communicate to new customers), and Hardware (the stores themselves).
