Role Description

At Stockwell AI we’re building the retail platform of the future. The past few years have seen massive changes to the retail landscape: legacy retailers have filed for bankruptcy as foot traffic to stores has dropped, vertical-specific direct-to-consumer retailers are attempting to upend retail economics by abandoning all physical presence, automation looms its head on the horizon and retailers are making acquisitions galore: Amazon’s bought Whole Foods, Walmart bought Jet, Target bought Shipt, etc.

We’re perfectly positioned in this shifting market. Our automated microstores (or, if you prefer, vending machines) bring the relevant slice of retail to where people live, work, and play. Because our stores have no moving parts, a Stockwell operator can sell whatever items they want from the shelves of our stores. Instead, we use computer vision to enable a seamless shopping experience.

Our core mission is to democratize physical distribution for retailers and brands alike, so that our users can discover and fall in love with a perfect set of products tailored just for them and their lifestyle. Our stores pay for themselves in less than a year, and we’re just about to really ramp up growth and bring Stockwell across the west coast.

We’re looking to bring on engineering leaders to build out our diverse tech stack. Today we have 43 employees and 110 stores live throughout the bay area - all of which run on a suite of software tools, technology, and processes that power our replenishment and retail businesses. We are currently building 15 stores a week out of our warehouse in Hayward, each of which sits within an IoT framework that allows us to remotely manage and version them. Finally, our react-native consumer app allows customers to open our stores, which use the latest in deep learning to power a frictionless retail experience and automatically build them their receipt.

We’re looking to grow out our full stack engineering team and power through a ton of development effort across our various functions. We use a django backend with react / react-native / graphql to power our internal and consumer facing interfaces.

Your Qualifications: - 3+ years of full-stack software development experience. Experience with React/Redux or similar JS frameworks. Experience with Python as a backend is a plus. - 2+ years of database experience with mySQL, sql-lite or Postgres. - A knack for architecture: You should have opinions on simple and elegant design of software systems. - BS or MS degree in Computer Science (or a related field). - Strong written and verbal communication skills, as you will need to interface with functional leads in our operations, retail, and sales organizations. - Incredibly fast learner, hungry for growth and/or ready to lead.

Preferred/Bonus Qualifications - 5+ years of experience with one or more general purpose programming languages including but not limited to: Java, C/C++, C#, Objective C, Python, JavaScript, or Go. - Experience with Django and the Django REST Framework - Experience with GraphQL - Experience with the Google Cloud Platform - An interest in Advertising/Retail/CPG - An interest in AI and Machine Learning

About Stockwell AI

At Stockwell we're building the future of brick and mortar retail by shrinking the store and bringing it to where people already are - where they live, play, and work. Our cabinet-style microstores use computer vision to automatically audit your transaction and build you your receipt. Our team of engineers, logistics and retail experts are working to redefine the economics of last-mile distribution, combining the convenience and personalization of e-commerce retail with the immediacy, tangibility, and serendipity of a physical storefront.

Company Culture

We've done the naive thing of doing everything ourselves — we're fully vertically integrated. This means that our company culture is by nature extremely collaborative and cross functional. It's not uncommon for engineers to take on more product ownership and work with business partners across Retail (what we fill the stores with), Ops (how we get the goods there), Sales (how we place the stores), Marketing (how we communicate to new customers), and Hardware (the stores themselves).

We value authenticity, thoughtfulness, and transparency. We balance execution and strategy. We encourage a growth mindset.
