Sunnyside
Sunnyside is on a mission to help anyone who drinks alcohol improve their health and wellness by building mindfulness about when and how much they drink.
Just as Calm built a multi-billion dollar business around proactive mental health, we'll do the same for proactive alcohol health — establishing a new popular wellness category. With 30% of the US adult population binge drinking one or more times per month, this is an untapped opportunity to create a great business while improving the lives of millions.

Why join us?
We've established early product market fit: thousands of paying subscribers, an efficient and highly scalable acquisition engine, and great early signal on retention.
We're growing fast: We onboarded our first paying customers in October of 2020 and have exceeded aggressive revenue targets each month since.
We've got growth in our DNA, and we know how to scale: Nick (co-founder & CEO) was early on the growth team at Lyft, Ian (co-founder & CGO) was the first marketing hire at MileIQ (acquired by Microsoft).
We're backed by an all-star investor group: Raised a $3.1M seed round in January 2021 led by Uncork Capital, with participation from Adjacent VC, Nir Eyal (author of Hooked), James Park (Founder of Fitbit), Mike Lee (founder of MyFitnessPal), and Logan Green (founder & CEO of Lyft), among other top tier investors.
We're making a huge impact: Our members reduce their weekly alcohol consumption by 30% on average in month 1, and 40% by month 3.
This is a massive market opportunity with no clear leader: Alcohol is a sleeping giant in our wellness picture. With 70% of US adults consuming alcohol and 30% overdoing it one or more times per month, there's a huge business to be built here. We're in position to lead this market.
The timing is right and our story is resonating: We were recently featured in the New York Times, with an incredibly positive mention (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/12/well/mind/covid-pandemic-drinking.html)
Engineering at Sunnyside
We're a small but mighty engineering team. We work in an agile scrum process with weekly sprints.
We're just getting started, so this is an opportunity to define the technical foundations of the business and have a huge impact on the product.
Because our system is primarily SMS based, we've got a really interesting opportunity to push the boundaries on what's possible for messaging as an interface. As we get better at improving our understanding of user intent from inbound messages received, we can build a best-in-class system that balances automation and the human touch to deliver an incredible user experience.
We're also collecting a unique dataset around daily drinking habits that up until this point have been a blindspot for most in their overall wellness picture. The technology we build will help connect the dots between drinking and other areas of health like sleep, calories, exercise, mental health and anxiety levels, and mood, to name a few. By processing user data and turning it into deeply personalized insights and recommendations, we'll help build new habits that last for life.
Rebuild 2-way messaging infrastructure from the ground up, processing inbound messages from users and routing them to appropriate response services based on context.
Augment the messaging experience with web and mobile app for deeper stats, progress visualization and insights.
Event-driven data infrastructure
Recommendation algorithms and deep personalization

Working at Sunnyside
Our team has great chemistry. Since our company was born in the pandemic, we've been remote since day one and have invested in creating a deliberate culture of inclusivity and fun despite not being able to be together in person. We're hard working and scrappy, and value owners who will take a project to completion without needing to be micromanaged. We genuinely like each other, and enjoy coming to work each day.
We're prioritizing diversity, equity and inclusion as a core part of our DNA. Though our founders are two white men, we've made it a priority to hire a team that brings unique perspective and lived experience to the table. As of now our team is 5 men and 3 women, with representation from different backgrounds and walks of life. We'll continue focusing here to build a company we're proud of.
Since we're remote and can't congregate around the proverbial water cooler, we are intentional about creating space to hang out in non-work contexts. We do a monthly all-team happy hour, and spend time in a daily standup checking in not just on what we're working on, but also how we're doing.
We don't have much formalized in terms of ERGs just yet since we're a really small team, but are excited to build more structure in this area as we scale. We have done a good job hiring a diverse founding team though, so the foundation is being laid for a company that elevates and celebrates teammates from any background.
As part of our commitment to an inclusive workplace, we are happy to offer prospective engineers the chance to connect with our engineering employees who come from underrepresented backgrounds. It’s a way to get a better sense of our team and what it might be like to work with us.
If you’re interested in connecting with our team, be sure to bring this up during one of our introductory calls!
