Sym
Sym empowers engineers to create the perfect security and privacy workflows for their teams. The Sym Platform turns tedious, manual compliance processes into executable workflow definitions that are managed as code.
Today, companies in high-compliance spaces (like healthcare) face a really difficult choice when rolling out security and privacy workflows: they can spend a ton of ⏰ & 💰 on building streamlined internal tools, or they can use off-the-shelf tools which slow their teams down. Enter Sym. We provide workflow templates and a large set of integrations to give companies the benefit of custom tooling, without them having to build or maintain anything.
We're backed by some of the best investors in infrastructure and security, and have super cool angels, like the founders of Bugsnag, LaunchDarkly, and DocSend.
Why join us?
We're a team of repeat founders and seasoned engineering and ops executives who have built our careers in high-compliance spaces.
We're backed by some of the best investors in the infra/devtools/compliance spaces, and have people like the CEO of Bugsnag, the CTO of LaunchDarkly, and the former CISO of Google as angels.
We have paying customers and are starting to rapidly scale up!
We're on a mission to make compliance suck less for all engineers, which will fundamentally change how innovation happens in important industries like healthcare.
Engineering at Sym
We have a pretty cool eng setup! Our team is small and super fast-paced. We use Linear to track cycles (kind of like sprints) that are each a week long, and touch various parts of our frontend, API, runtime, and SDK. Everyone works as full-stack as they are comfortable doing, and collaborates closely with Jon, our CTO. Jon has 20+ years of eng, devops, and management experience, and is not only a domain expert, but a fantastic mentor to boot.
We set up goals for the week and do a blameless retro on Monday, and people open PRs on Github as they complete work. We're big on constructive code review :) Master gets auto-deployed to our staging environment, which frequently gets promoted to production—your work is out in people's hands shortly after getting merged!
We're building an SDK where the audience is developers, so we need to make sure to get the abstractions and UX right. This is really tricky when dealing with new paradigms, but luckily we're able to dogfood and work closely with our existing customers!
Other challenges include building a runtime that safely stitches together our templates with user-provided code, capturing compliance-friendly evidence in a low-friction way across the system, and building the system around unique compliance constraints of our own.
There are also a ton of UX/presentation challenges around surfacing reports in a self-serve query interface.
You would be building out the first version of our SDK and runtime, which will be used by every single one of our customers to define and customize workflows. This involves focusing on excellent developer experience, and doing some novel source-to-source transformation in Python.
You would rapidly build out our suite of user-facing APIs, with superb documentation, that are the interface to an entire virtual machine.
You would help shape and implement our user-facing dashboard, which will be crucial to communicating the value we provide. This is a neat opportunity to put a twist on the classic CI/CD dashboard design.
You would contribute to our best-in-class documentation, tutorials, and onboarding flows, which are a first-class product at Sym!
