Every day, two million passengers and their baggage are screened at US airports. Millions more are screened at international airports, office buildings, infrastructure centers, and more. Beyond people, billions of pieces of cargo, mail, and freight are scanned. What most of these have in common is little automation and very manual process.
Synapse provides algorithmic analysis of security x-ray images to determine if they contain a threat, such as a firearm of explosive. We deploy our deep learning-based algorithms on premises at global airports, and provide a user interface for screeners to communicate with the algorithms. We already have global pilots underway, aim to help our customers significantly increase safety and throughput while reducing the operational costs of these checkpoints.
We’re backed by top-tier Bay Area investors that believe in our vision for a safer world.

Why join us?
Our AI platform is being deployed around the world, with current pilots in Japan, Sweden, and Paris. Team members can travel to deployment sites and see the impact of our work.
Every line of code helps make the world a safer place. From stopping terrorist attacks to keeping critical infrastructure secure, know that every day you are improving our society.
Our investors provide tremendous support and encouragement. From Founders Fund to Village Global (Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates), our investors provide market insight, technical support, and everything we need to bring our AI platform to the world.
Engineering at Synapse Technology
Our team is small. We work in agile-like sprints in the foreground, often focused around an upcoming pilot or product deliverable. In the background, we have ongoing projects particularly in computer vision. We try to be fairly aggressive about prioritizing the most important tasks to avoid overloading the engineering team.
In computer vision - Dealing with low volumes of labeled data - Dealing with occlusion and overlap - Training algorithms that can work across different models of machines
In UI development - Developing a UI that’s intuitive, glanceable, but also not distracting (operators have only 2-4 seconds to see each bag) - Developing a secure communications architecture over insecure networks - Running the UI on a separate monitor off a micro computer (Intel NUC) In deploying our hardware - Developing an on-prem hardware system (dealing with security, communications, and code robustness)
(CV project) Develop a GAN-based architecture to synthetically generate training data from separate foreground and background images
(SWE project) Develop a “checkpoint simulation” UI that allows us to test screeners in an environment similar to what they would encounter on an actual checkpoint.
(UI project) Develop an interface for airport supervisors to be able to control the
alert level, to be able to err on the side of alerting the operator if there's news of a potential threat for example.
Working at Synapse Technology
Our team is built on transparency, directness, trust, and good judgment. We’re all one team with a shared mission, and we’re all here for a reason and try not to lose sight of that. We believe that that mishaps and mistakes get made, but it’s how they’re dealt with that matters most. Engineers have a good degree of independence, and should be self-motivated without needing someone looking over their shoulder. We also have a good time, and enjoy going out for lunch, or the occasional dinner, or doing some team evening or weekend outings from time to time!
Unlimited vacation per manager approval!
Opportunity to travel the world and help deploy our technology.
As long as you get your work done and help your peers succeed, we are happy!
We have regular team events, ranging from sporting events to movie nights to dinners.
We offer the absolute best Anthem healthcare , dental, and vision plans.
We offer a stipend to help with moving costs.
