Every day, two million passengers and their baggage are screened at US airports. Millions more are screened at international airports, office buildings, infrastructure centers, and more. Beyond people, billions of pieces of cargo, mail, and freight are scanned. What most of these have in common is little automation and very manual process.
Synapse provides algorithmic analysis of security x-ray images to determine if they contain a threat, such as a firearm of explosive. We deploy our deep learning-based algorithms on premises at global airports, and provide a user interface for screeners to communicate with the algorithms. We already have global pilots underway, aim to help our customers significantly increase safety and throughput while reducing the operational costs of these checkpoints.

Our team is small. We work in agile-like sprints in the foreground, often focused around an upcoming pilot or product deliverable. In the background, we have ongoing projects particularly in computer vision. We try to be fairly aggressive about prioritizing the most important tasks to avoid overloading the engineering team.

(CV project) Develop a GAN-based architecture to synthetically generate training data from separate foreground and background images
(SWE project) Develop a “checkpoint simulation” UI that allows us to test screeners in an environment similar to what they would encounter on an actual checkpoint.
(UI project) Develop an interface for airport supervisors to be able to control the
alert level, to be able to err on the side of alerting the operator if there's news of a potential threat for example.
Our team is built on transparency, directness, trust, and good judgment. We’re all one team with a shared mission, and we’re all here for a reason and try not to lose sight of that. We believe that that mishaps and mistakes get made, but it’s how they’re dealt with that matters most. Engineers have a good degree of independence, and should be self-motivated without needing someone looking over their shoulder. We also have a good time, and enjoy going out for lunch, or the occasional dinner, or doing some team evening or weekend outings from time to time!
