Engineering at Thumbtack

Engineering team and processes

With over 200+ engineers (spanning backend, frontend, mobile, data, and fullstack), we have folks at every level build products and systems that directly impact our customers and professionals. Our engineers are deployed into product pods, or feature teams, that work collaboratively with product management and product design throughout the development lifecycle.

We believe in tackling these hard problems together as a team, with strong values around collaboration, ownership and transparency.

Working at Thumbtack

At Thumbtack, we deeply care about our employees and our community. With our recent switch to virtual-first, our employees are able to work from anywhere, with optional in person offsites three times a year and an optional company-wide Camp once a year. These offsite events are a way for employees to build in-person bonds and reinforce a feeling of connectedness.

Diversity and Inclusion

We build, measure and hold ourselves accountable for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in everything we do. Our 8 ERGs (employee resource groups) are identity-based communities that foster a sense of belonging at Thumbtack. Access is for our different abled employees, APAC Tacks for our Asian and Pacific Islander employees, NOBLETacks for our Black employees, Parents for our community of parents and caregivers, Proudtacks for our LGBTIA employees, TackVets for our community of veterans, Vamos! For our LatinX employees, and Women for our community of women.

Employees don’t have to identify with a group - allies are welcome and encouraged to support each group’s efforts! Our ERG Leaders have monthly “ERG takeovers,” a full month of celebration and educational programming, as well as budget for events and employee matching dollars for non-profit organizations they would like to support.

We also know how important it is to build inclusive products. We have uncovered potential areas for platform bias and have launched company wide product inclusion initiatives to address them. We believe that all of us can contribute to building products for everyone. In addition, our Trust & Safety team have an extensive non-discrimination policy and DEI and procurement have partnered to implement our first Diversity Supplier strategy.

We've established our Executive Diversity Council which is co-chaired by our CEO and Head of Global DEI. All C-suite executives serve as executive sponsors for one of our Global ERGs. Our employees embody inclusion and impact. For every department, there is a DEI and Social Impact DRI (Directly Responsible Individual) which meet regularly with our executive leadership. This ensures a culture that is inclusive and collaborative, with many opportunities across the company for employees to plug into impact and inclusion work. We also offer several donation match initiatives throughout the year.

Employee-led DEI efforts - Thumtack has 8 Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): Vamos, Women, TackVets, Access, NOBLEtacks, Parents, Proudtacks & APACtacks
