Engineering at TripActions

Engineering team and processes

We have a team of about 50 engineers. Our main office is in Palo Alto, and we also have engineers in San Francisco and Amsterdam. We follow agile principles, running on a weekly sprint cycle; but we focus on getting things done rather than strictly following any processes.

We move fast (we do daily releases to production) but do not sacrifice quality for speed, we always focus on customer satisfaction first.

We do a quick rough planning on Monday for the week, engineers work very closely with product managers and designers to discuss product requirements and review designs before they are finalized.

Technical Challenges

One category of challenge is about reliability, performance and scalability. We want our customers to have the best possible experience, which means for us they they should have access to an extensive inventory of travel options (flights/hotels inventory) at all time, and have a great user experience in terms of the flow and speed of the apps. We need to guarantee large inventory available at all time and optimized search speed while integrating with many external system providing those inventories; this involves being very creative on using caching, parallel processing for example (on backend and frontend).

Another category of challenge is about re-thinking the travel user experience completely, we constantly innovate on travel booking experience, challenge the industry standards, come up with product features that no other services offer in the travel industry.

Projects you might work on
  • Work on improving the speed of hotel search by 200%, making it faster than other apps in the industry.

  • Rebuild the flight search flow to offer a completely innovative way for users to book flights.

  • Re-architect the backend app code into a set of microservices.
