  • WE ARE BUILDING A PRODUCT CUSTOMERS LOVE

    We went from $0 to $1M in GMV per month in five months with just over 1000 customers per month. We had super high levels of retention for a product that facilitated ecommerce purchases: 56% MAU retention & 25-35% monthly retention (after month 2) - we found that customers LOVED the product so much that we didn't have enough money to service all the demand.

    At the time, Try.com only worked on a handful of online stores and we were paying for all the merchandise customers wanted to Try with our personal credit cards —this wouldn't scale.

    We had to put up a waitlist while we figured out how to scale to service to tens of thousands, and eventually millions, of customers.

  • WE TURNED A PROBLEM INTO A REVENUE STREAM

    Everyone told us we were crazy. Paying upfront for goods won't work, they said. Where are you going to find the money? they said. The only way is to integrate with merchants, they said.

    We pitched merchants, but the biggest merchants in the world - where all the volume is & where our customers want to shop - didn't want to work with some little startup. And we would never achieve ubiquity if we had to integrate with every retailer on the planet. We were forced to innovate; instead of integrating with retailers we built our technology on the payment stack.

    After 18 months of negotiations and integration work, we completed a one-of-a-kind deal with American Express which enables Try.com to generate credit cards in realtime on behalf of our users, funded by an unlimited credit line provided by Amex.

    This is a unique deal which not only enables us to transact on any online store which accepts Amex but also generates income through a revenue share of the interchange Amex earns on every Try.com transaction.

    You would never pay to try clothes in a store, so why do you online?

    The success of companies like Stitch Fix & Trunk Club, show the impact that trying clothes at home has on consumer behaviour. Amazon recently announced Amazon Prime Wardrobe, 'try before you buy' for merchandise on Amazon Fashion. In five years, people will look back and think how crazy it was when we used to pay upfront for clothes online. It is inevitable.

    The technology we have built puts us in a unique position to enable Try Before You Buy for any online store, we're building a team to help us fulfill enormous potential in a multi-trillion dollar global market.

Engineering team and processes

We operate on two week cycles. Each cycle begins with a meeting to discuss the time estimates for features and ends with a demo and/or retrospective of the sprint. We use Pull Requests on Github to conduct code reviews, and have Continuous Integration so tests are run on each commit.

Technical Challenges

Each of our projects is auto deployed to our staging environment on push to master, so it's easy to test changes.

Our stack is divided into different services (Core API, Try.com website, Notifications service, Webhooks, ...) that interoperate between them.

Projects you might work on
  • You will work on the Consumer team to ship features to the various client apps we support (iOS app, Chrome Extension, Try.com website...)

  • You will contribute to the Operations team, shipping features to support the Ops team's key metric; Time to Order. This means building tools to enable faster and more accurate risk assessments, order placing, post-checkout order syncing and dispute management.
