Our gene synthesis technology using silicon is groundbreaking. It enables us to manufacture custom DNA for our customers on a much larger scale than our competitors, more accurately, and at a significantly lower price point. The world is only just starting to figure out what it can do with custom designed DNA. For example we have a partnership with Microsoft to explore data storage using DNA.
To enable our business to scale, we are building an end-to-end software platform for ordering custom designed synthetic DNA. No biology degree is required and we provide the opportunity to discover and learn about synthetic biology.

Engineering team and processes

We are small but growing team of a half dozen software engineers. It is made of a mix of full-stack, backend and frontend engineers. Each team member is actively working with stakeholders across the company. All engineers are also involved in devops.

Requirements both come from the team and the stakeholders (factory, data team, customer service, sales, c-level, etc) We are agile using a feature-based release methodology as we need to align very closely with our factory. We have multiple stacks (prod, qa, etc..) and go through typical testing cycle. Testing consists of both unit tests, integration tests and live test with the interested stakeholders.

Technical Challenges

Synthetic biology in itself is complex and fascinating. Making it a commercialized high throughput product you can order as easily as a meal requires complex rules while keeping the system nimble to absorb fast changing factory protocols and new product lines. As every order is unique by definition and highly customizable we have to deal with large amount of complex data. Retaining ease of use and performance is always a challenge.
