Upstart is a leading AI lending platform partnering with banks to expand access to affordable credit. Forbes recently ranked Upstart #12 on its list of most promising AI companies in America. Inc. Magazine also recognized Upstart as one of the Best Workplaces for 2020.

By leveraging Upstart's AI platform, Upstart-powered banks can have higher approval rates and lower loss rates, while simultaneously delivering the exceptional digital-first lending experience their customers demand. Why join us?

  • Great traction — Since launching in May 2014, we've now had over $10.8B in loans originated and have been in hyper growth mode since our IPO in December 2020. We're looking to double the size of our engineering team by end of year!

  • Competition doesn't understand technology — Upstart's patent-pending platform is the first to receive a no-action letter from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau related to fair lending - we voluntarily share regular updates on our models’ performance in expanding access to fair credit

  • Great partnerships — By leveraging Upstart's AI platform, Upstart-powered banks can have higher approval rates and lower loss rates, while simultaneously delivering the exceptional digital-first lending experience their customers demand. Upstart's model is significantly more accurate than traditional lending models; allowing us to approve more applicants at lower loss rates. The results provided from the access to credit comparison show that the tested [Upstart] model approves 27% more borrowers than the traditional model and yields 16% lower average APRs for approved loans

Engineering at Upstart Network, Inc.

Engineering team and processes

Our engineers work on all aspects of the Upstart platform, from our data prediction model to our backend financial platform, to our web interfaces and 3rd party API integrations.

You'll enjoy significant autonomy in architecting systems, writing algorithms, and crafting elegant user interfaces. Our team is broken into product-oriented squads, giving engineers direct access to the end-user and the ability to launch features without being blocked.

We’ve also designed the squad system to enable constant learning: engineers have the chance to rotate squads every 6 months to learn new parts of the codebase and business. Do you want to learn a new language or a new skill? There's a squad here to learn from!

You'll also get the chance to solve challenges with interesting engineering constraints, work in a distributed system, and collaborate with data scientists.

Technical Challenges

1) A lot of our technical challenges have to do with scale, we've grown a lot in a short space of time and it's important we keep our infrastructure reliable since we're handling personal finances.

2) We're building more infrastructure to help with fraud protection, which is becoming more important as we continue growing.

3) Engineers are responsible finding creative ways to verify non-traditional information about loan applicants.

How we work, we are:

( ) Curious, feedback-driven, open communication channels, collaborative

( ) Cross collaborative - SWE/Product/Design/QA are tightly integrated to the regular processes

( ) Perform code reviews to identify code issues and strive to improve quality of codebase

( ) Pair programming on need basis - more frequently during ramp up period but generally welcomed when appropriate

( ) Work in 2 week sprints, daily standup, sprint planning meetings and retros every 2 weeks

( ) Care about code quality, push back on product demands that affect code integrity
