Urbint pairs urban data with artificial intelligence to solve complex infrastructure issues for cities. We aggregate, ingest, and analyze tremendous amounts of urban datasets and enhance them by using domain-specific algorithms and artificial intelligence. We discover connections, define relationships, analyze patterns, and predict behavior to create urban intelligence.
We bring decades of domain expertise from industries across business, government, and non-profits.
We are ex-Google, open-source developers, and specialists in machine-learning who are fluent in the intricacies and complexities of urban data.
Our team has had successful exits in big data analytics, enterprise software, and urban data aggregators. At heart, we constantly look for solutions to everyday problems.
We are working with some of the largest urban operators (utility, telecom, real estate) across the country, and are backed by leading investors in the urban tech space.
We have a very flat engineering organization, with the two primary focuses being data infrastructure and machine learning. We practice agile development with quick stand-ups every morning and sprint planning every two weeks.
We have a logical unification engine which we use to determine whether or not two things are the same. For example, if we see a person named “John Smith” on two different documents that we ingest, how do we determine that they’re talking about the same person? What if we see “Jon Smith” - is that the same person, or a typo? While many in our industry use string equality, that method is prone to both losing information and being overly presumptive. Our unification engine gives us a framework to explore these puzzles.
We process a lot of data and typically work on the BEAM (the Erlang / Elixir VM) which is highly concurrent and distributed. Determining how to archive our task concurrently can be the difference between minutes and days when processing our datasets.
Lastly, to achieve the performance characteristics needed to process our data and apply our algorithms, we wrote our own (graph) database. Having this level of vertical integration enables us to tune every aspect of our stack and lets us do things that would not otherwise be feasible.
Project example: You would get to work on building and enhancing our unification engine as we expand our breadth and depth of attribute, event and geospatial datasets.
Urbint is first and foremost a technology company. This means that the business works with engineering, not against it.
We are a team of close-knit, talented engineers who obsess over problem solving, code quality and workflow.
We pride ourselves on deleting code. By keeping our modules focused, we iterate quickly and keep internal API quality top-of-mind. We believe in keeping our internal modules as well-kept as our open-source libraries. Code is reviewed continuously and the discussion encouraged.
