Engineering at Vector
Two week sprint planning with daily standups. We split off side discussions into dedicated Zoom meetings with the stakeholders asap. We are active on Slack and will jump into a call if helpful to unblock someone. For large projects we assign a lead who we assist in breaking down the project into milestones, may delivers a 2-3 design doc as needed, and can schedule meetings to discuss challenges. We try to respect engineers independence while monitoring to jump in to assist if guidance is needed.
- Business workflows are complex, many similar but unique, and require customization. We developed a metadata-driven architecture so that the UI rendering and the backend computations are dynamic based on schema metadata, triggers, configuration, and roles.
- Collaborative workflows across mobile, web, and offline usage is a distributed systems problem. We used event sourcing to record and replay activity to coordinate concurrent updates.
- Prior to document scanning being popular on mobile, now often using ML, we had to develop our own. To do so, we stabilized edge detection using a recency/frequency filter (based on insights from our open-source work caching library using TinyLFU admission) and scaled our whitebalance & denoising image enhancements using lambda functions.
Implement an activity feed and notification inbox, e.g. using getstream.io, to assist back office users to respond to workflow activity. For example, a driver checks in at a warehouse requires that the shipping clerk assigns a dock door for loading. Given that they are managing a constant stream of drivers, an activity feed helps them stay on top of what is ready to be done next.
Custom views on the web allows for fine tuning workflows, such as saving filters to trim a lists to the relevant work items. We are implementing similar functionality on mobile so that tabs can be defined contextual to the domain. For example instead of a generic list of all documents (proof of delivery, pay sheet), custom mobile views would send a filtered query for a nicer user experience.
Build sales momentum by helping our customer success team to perform more tasks themselves. We are designing a document and workflow builder so that solution engineers can rapidly onboard a customer and adjust to their changing business processes.
