VILLAGE is a social venture expanding access to out-of-school education. Children spend 80% of their waking hours outside of the K-12 school system, yet in most communities, the market for educational opportunities is fragmented: Families struggle to access providers and providers struggle to access families.

Engineering at Village

Engineering team and processes

Our engineering team operates on two week cycles, which usually begin with a team meeting discussing time estimates for features and prioritizing roadmap goals, and ends with a demo meeting where each engineer can show off work they've completed if they'd like to. Engineers typically work with our head of product, our designer, and any other stakeholders to spec a feature, and then work on the feature individually, but will occasionally work on a project with another engineer depending on the scope. We use Pull Requests on GitHub for code reviews, and JIRA to track tasks and progress. All engineers are also empowered to push code to production, which we often do multiple times a day. On a day to day basis we have a stand-up report but this is done asynchronously through Slack and does not require a team meeting.

Technical Challenges

Accessibility is something we're really focused on as a company and not just in the traditional sense; we're also trying to be accessible to people who aren't used to utilizing tech solutions to solve problems. Some of our customers will be low-income families who require financial aid for registration fees and probably aren't used to fancy UIs and complex workflows, so solving the accessibility problem for groups like this stem not just from marketing and sales but also from the tech and product team to build a workflow that is accessible, functional, and beautiful at the same time.
