Role Description

Virgo is seeking a talented Senior Web Development Engineer to lead future development of our web video portal for endoscopy. As an engineer at Virgo, you will work directly with our CTO and the rest of the engineering team, plus you will have close contact with the sales and customer success teams.

The most compelling reason to be an engineer at Virgo is because of the exposure to a wide variety of technical problems. Virgo isn't just a web app or a mobile app. Virgo is a platform involving a hardware IoT component, video streaming, cloud storage/compute, machine learning, AND it is a growing web app. We leverage a number of interesting technologies, libraries, and APIs to get the job done. As a Senior Web Development Engineer, you will gain exposure and influence over the entire platform stack, in addition to the web portal.

In this role you'll get to:

  • Design and implement features enabling completely new business models on top of existing data
  • Redesign core functionality to improve usability
  • Modernize our existing website to bring the interface to par with best-in-class products

We'll expect you to:

  • Have extensive experience with Python
  • Have substantial experience with Django, Flask or a similar Python-based web framework
  • Have a good eye for design and be comfortable translating designs into HTML/CSS/JavaScript
  • Be proficient with modern JavaScript, TypeScript and associated toolsets (Node, Webpack, etc.)
  • You are comfortable moving up and down the stack as needed to finish a project

Bonus points if you have:

  • Solid experience with Vue.js, React.js or similar frontend frameworks
  • Experience dealing with streaming video and media in the browser
  • Familiarity with Postgresql
  • Experience deploying WSGI applications using gunicorn/uWSGI and NGINX
  • Experience performing OAuth and SSO integrations
  • Previously been a technical team lead or intend to become one
  • Interest in learning more about other parts of our infrastructure by getting your hands dirty writing highly-available Go code, messing with video encoders and learning how to deploy ML models at scale

Virgo was a fully distributed team before the pandemic started, and we intend to remain distributed for the foreseeable future. Because of this structure, strong written communication skills, time management skills, and personal accountability are very important to us.

Virgo provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

No clinical knowledge required...we'll get you trained up to speed with our Colon Class :)

About Virgo

Virgo is the leading cloud video capture, management, and AI analysis platform for endoscopic medical procedures. Since launching in 2018, we've helped physicians from leading medical centers including The Mayo Clinic, Northwestern, and Mass General capture over 300,000 procedure videos — the largest data set of its kind.

Our platform consists of a small device — similar in form factor to an AppleTV — that connects to any existing endoscopy system. The Virgo capture device automatically and securely captures procedure videos and transfers them to our HIPAA compliant cloud storage and web portal.

We're currently expanding the Virgo platform to include tools that automatically identify patients who are good candidates for clinical trials — starting with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). These tools incorporate AI analysis of procedure videos, coupled with information from the clinical medical record. The typical IBD trial site recruits only 1 patient per year. Virgo is working with leading pharma companies to accelerate trial site recruitment to 2 patients per month, which will help get new treatments to market faster and generate hundreds of millions of dollars in additional revenue for pharma companies.

Long-term, we are building the most comprehensive longitudinal dataset of endoscopy videos and will continue to leverage this dataset for new AI applications. One such example is in the space of real-time polyp detection for colorectal cancer screening (see case study with Google's Coral EdgeTPU system:

Company Culture

We're a hard working bunch, yet flexible when needed to respect the importance of personal time. We're very open about our successes and the challenges facing the company, highlighted by a bi-weekly strategy meeting. More than anything, we really care about improving healthcare. All new employees go through an 8 week Colon Class to learn about anatomy, pathology, procedures, and health technology!
