VTS is the #1 SaaS solution for commercial real estate. We are changing the CRE technology landscape with our cloud-based leasing and asset management platform, which allows landlords and agents to manage their entire workflow in one centralized location, accessible on intuitive and intelligent web/mobile products.

You can learn more about how we've built our software at https://buildingvts.com.

Why join us?
  • We’ve raised a total of $110M capital in pursuit of a substantial market opportunity and today we are the largest vertical SaaS company in NYC.

  • The team is just over 200 employees strong (product/eng/data is ~70) and our engineering and company leadership includes alumni from Pivotal Labs, CaseCommons, Microsoft, Zillow, and Qwirky, and commercial real estate companies like CBRE and JLL. .

  • We've helped bring a historically technologically archaic industry through the decades and empowered them with today's modern technology. We just announced our new product, MarketView, that we are planning to release into beta this year and we are looking for senior talent and strong leadership to join the team.

  • Our engineering culture places a high level of importance on learning and development. We put this in practice by:

    • Lunch n' Learns
    • Group code review
    • Onsite coaching from well know folks (e.g. Sandi Metz)
    • Mentorship rotation
    • Pair programming
    • A company provided education budget per engineer
    • Hosting meetups
    • AND more!

Engineering at VTS
Engineering team and processes

We operate in cross-functional teams. Our teams tend to have a Product Manager and several engineers, one of whom is a tech lead. Depending on the type of team there may also be a designer and QA analyst on the team.

We work in 2 week sprint cycles and leverage the best practices from scrum and kanban to help us stay organized and continue to improve. We do daily stand-ups, retros, product backlog refinement, OKR check-ins, and more.

We employ things like architectural design reviews, pair programming, code reviews, and continuous integration. We deploy multiple times a day to product, utilize feature flags, and instrument our applications to be easily observable.

Technical Challenges

Visualizations – we create rich interactive visualizations of building layouts to help our users understand occupancy and make better leasing decisions. (Before VTS, our users actually mocked site plans up in, you guessed it, Microsoft Excel. Seriously, Excel as a drawing tool :P)

Fuzzy Search – one challenge we had was improving the accuracy of our analytics and reporting. Our customers often integrate multiple disparate data sources but desire a single unified view of their tenant relationships. In our blog, Elaina speaks to how we’ve leveraged advanced ElasticSearch features to intelligently dedupe and aggregate portfolio data. https://buildingvts.com/a-lesson-in-iterative-development-62ddf17986a4

Analytics / Data Science – our core workflow product yields a rich data asset, and we see our next big opportunity in leveraging analytics and machine learning to proactively guide leasing decisions and understand/predict market performance.

View The Graph – we want to capture what we describe as “the CRE graph”, which means the relationships between every tenant, broker, owner and building in our system. This involves a major retooling of our core data model, which is one of those “rebuilding the engine while keeping the plane flying” type projects.

Platform/Integrations – on the backend we’re running Rails 4 and will be upgrading to Rails 5.1. We also plan to rethink our frontend stack and API technology. No firm decisions here yet, but we’re excited to explore React, Vue, AngularJS 5 and GraphQL, and would love to bring folks onto the team who have prior experience in replatforming on the frontend.
