Well Paid provides automated bill splitting for recurring expenses, free money transfers, and connected budgeting all in one place. A Well Paid user can effortlessly connect recurring expenses to a friends or roommates, like autopay for transfers, and enable everyone to see their share of the expense in a true budget plan.

  • The company is small but seasoned. The co-founders include a former director of finance and analytics from PayPal/Venmo and a Sr. Engineering Manager from Albert.

  • You likely have or have had a need for the product, and we plan to give it away for free. Unless you had a joint account with your college roommates, then splitting the rent, electric or other bills meant some kind of system with manual effort. With a few (thousand) lines of code, we can fix the request-transfer hassle, simplify personal finances to show your portion of bills, and make something truly impactful.

  • We are still early-stage but built for scale. We hate tech debt, so when you take the leap with us, you'll find Docker containers, reusable components, and future-proof code structures designed for expansion. We have big aspirations and are laying the foundation to be sturdy.

Engineering team and processes

We operate on a weekly sprint cycle closing on Fridays to celebrate our victories and plot the week ahead. We incorporate demos into daily standups as we tackle PRs and march towards the final tickets in our Asana board. While small means we need to pitch in together to solve problems, it also means you get to see the whole process work closely with others over random Slacks or Google Meets. There are no ‘ownership’ or visibility issues here.

Technical Challenges

While our algorithm can easily optimize the transfers needed to split a bill with others, we wage a war on the complexity of splitting bills in what we show our users. Think of this challenge as a many-to-many data issue with groups of bills split in multiple ways with multiple people, but must be shown as cleanly as Venmo in a viewport of 375px. Our technical challenges are mostly how to fit big things in such a small package.

Projects you might work on
  • You will help the team finish the final few screens for launch owning several screens end-to-end

  • You will create a dashboard with an adapted Sankey chart to depict cash flows from you to others, and others to you, for expected costs of shared bills. The feature can be containerized to avoid too much issue with responsiveness, however, there are hover states including color opacity changes.

  • You will expand the mobile app in React Native to improve our predictive budgeting overview

We do not track metrics for diversity at this stage, however, the company is already predominately comprised of under-represented ethnicities. We aim to hire the best engineers and good people regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, etc. As we scale, we will evaluate our sources for new talent to ensure we incorporate diverse backgrounds and ideas to better serve our customers.

We have few policies at this stage, however, we do ensure everyone feels welcome to provide input to the product, voice their opinions, and be respectful of others. We occasionally will hire internationally, and while we have not had any issue to date, we will not tolerate lack of empathy or patience for non-fluent communication. We value good code, strong work ethic, and good humor for all.

We offer a direct line of communication to all individuals with the founders in 1-on-1 sessions weekly to address issues quickly but also build a more personal and human connection with the team. As we grow beyond a small group, we will implement more focused resources and support opportunities.
